"Hong Kong's democratic forces were facing electoral disaster early this morning after voters shunned the polls - and the democrats - in large numbers....Turnout stood at just 45 percent - or 1.52 million - of all those eligible to vote in the geographical constituencies by the time the polls closed at 10.30pm.

[City University political scientist James Sung Lap-kung] said "enthusiasm for the election had been dulled by the heavy media coverage of the Olympic Games".

Apology of the year

From the South China Morning Post:

"A sincere apology to Carlson Tong Ka-shing for the serious error in this column last week. Mr Tong recently stepped down as chairman of the listing committee of the Hong Kong stock exchange, having served on the committee for six years, the maximum term permitted under the listing rules. This is what was originally written. Unfortunately, during the editing process, it was misinterpreted and erroneously reported as "Carlson Tong Ka-shing who has been jailed for six years", which is completely false".
