The somewhat lamented former Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (well, she did add to the gaiety of the nation) has just had her reading list revealed.

The dailies and the ethnic minority press came as no great surprise, but the list of mags did, as it includes The London Review of Books and The Times Literary Supplement.

No philistine she, although quite why the taxpayers should stump up in order to brighten her dinner party conversation is something of a mystery.

Everybody's favourite Mancunian, Hazel Blears (just mistyped that as 'Bleats'...) has made herself rather a hostage to fortune with a speech today:

"Saying some ministerial colleagues live on "planet politics", Blears will complain that their lack of real-life experience...have left politics "in trouble". Blears will say: "There is a trend towards politics being seen as a career move rather than call to public service.

"Increasingly we have seen a 'transmission belt' from university activist, MPs' researcher, think-tank staffer, special adviser, to Member of Parliament and ultimately to the front bench".

And what has Ginger Haze done for a living over the last 30 years?

1978-1980 - Council lawyer

1981 - Solicitor in private practice

1982-1997 - Sundry council-related lawyeries.

1997 to date - MP

The elephant in the room

Exciting news from Pravda Central: "£12.5 million to tackle radicalisation and help prevent extremism in communities".

And I wonder which communities the government is concerned about, and what manner of radicalisation it might be thinking of? Have you guessed yet?

OK, the press release has just under 1000 words in it, and just after the half-way point, someone - La Blears - actually points at Jumbo:

"work to strengthen governance in mosques and the capacity of imams and Muslim women beginning to take a stronger role".

And thereafter, no mention of the M word at all.
