'Mindless criminals'

Which they very rarely are. News of a speed camera in Banstead being destroyed was described as a 'mindless criminal act' by the stunningly euphemistically named Surrey Safety Camera Partnership.

While I am not in the business of condoning criminal damage etc etc (and I do not have a car anyway), the attack on the speed camera would have called for considerable planning and organisation. Hardly mindless.

I reccomend thermate and a magnesium strip and wish you well.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 2:19 pm

If you stretch cling fim over them it is hard to detect . Actually there have been a few such incidents .

There are convincing stats to show they do not prevent accidents and the invasion of surveillance is an afront. Its suprsing how important these issues are electorally . Look at Nu Lab shovelling their toll scam onto local councils .

I joined the Conservative Party because the council took my parking space

Anonymous Anonymous said... 3:17 pm

If only the roads were clear enough in London that speeding could even be an option.

I notice new cameras' are now placed in very low speed zones in the vain hope of generating revenue.

Blogger James Higham said... 4:14 pm

It's a good point, this last. If you can't move faster than a crawl, what's the point?

Blogger Rigger Mortice said... 4:17 pm

there is none.dare I use the word---but statistically, there is evidence that they have made various people lots of money, not least insurers, the police, driving safety schools and of course the govt.

Blogger Rigger Mortice said... 4:19 pm

and whilst I agree that speed kills,so does crack cocaine but they don't seem too fussed about that

Anonymous Anonymous said... 4:38 pm

Rigger there was a study in the Standard(quite) recently showing that 5% of accidents were caused by excessive speed and 95% were caused by loss of concentration. It is problematical admittedly but if you take out the car thieves on crack speed is minor problem.

I wouldn’t fight on this ground though . There is no limit to the argument for safety and in this case the need for Liberty outweighs the problem by a long way. Incidentally the government make very little money from it . It is a run in such profligate way it takes all the cash to keep it going. The prfit is in the millions and I remember it was about the size of Simon Cowells tax bill

Anonymous Anonymous said... 4:45 pm

"Surrey Safety Camera Partnership". Who are they in "partnership" with? Surely they don't imagine they're in "partnership" with their employers, the taxpayers?

Anonymous Anonymous said... 7:23 pm

O/T but I want to bring this to people's attention. Over at The Times, Daniel Finkelstein, on his blog, directed readers to a sympathic and pleasant article about Monica Lewinksky now - in her mid-thirties and with a newly-earned Master's from the LSE - as she still tries to live down her youthful indiscretions and foolishness.

I read it and it was a fair-minded piece. On Finkelstein's blog, there was only one comment - a disgraceful comment from someone who obviously loathes women. Yes, axe-murderer John Hirst has found Finkelstein's blog. For an ex-con, he certainly does get around.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 8:01 pm

verity i will go and read it

Anonymous Anonymous said... 8:10 pm

Just read it , hardly original was it?
he gets "around" due to the fact that nobody want anything to do with him.
Celebrity big brother has just started, yes its awful , but Verity ,you would love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 8:29 pm

Phitch - Yes, I probably would, but I don't get British TV over here, except what I can get on the Beeb's site.

The thing about Hirst is - this article that Finkelstein directed his readers to was a fair-minded compassionate exploration of what it must be like to never be able to shake an earlier (non-violent) stupidity. She was in the thrall of a manipulative individual who was the most powerful man in the world. She was silly. She thought he was going to leave his wife and marry her. And it doesn't matter what she has achieved since, she cannot shake that earlier episode which I am sure she regrets down to the tips of her toes.

That the axe-murderer chose to make such a tone-deaf comment in light of the merciful nature of the article tells me he has no sympathy for women. He has no remorse for murdering an old lady and I really think he doesn't see why he should. I think he's a woman hater.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 8:41 pm

Verity,
I very much agree.
A very silly young woman who had her head turned by
"the worlds most powerful man"
I always saw him as Blair but with brains and charisma.
Cant blame the girl, she went with lust,so did he , difference of course is that he DOES know beter. Her life is blighted and BILL is just Bill.

celebrity big brother so far is ken russell (bizzare as you can imagine)
jermaine jackson of the jackson five.
The defrocked miss great britain, a scouse moron and bedwarmer to a middle aged footballer.
And another is a washed up female pop star.
I am praying that Kilroy silk will be on the lsit

Anonymous Anonymous said... 8:43 pm

list.
And just ignore hirst , word will get around, nobody wants to have anything to do with him.
Wouldnt it be nice if he got a nice council flat next door to windmill dave?

Anonymous Anonymous said... 9:24 pm

Yes, that would be most entertaining. But Windmill Dave has never so much as seen a council flat, never mind lived near one!

Monica was just a kid out of college and she'd come to the attention of the most powerful (and manipulative) man in the world and was thrilled to bits but unlike the rest of us, who can bury our youthful indescretions - or even genuinely forget them - she can't.

Blair would like to be like Clinton but, have you ever noticed? - he doesn't like touching people. I am sure his handshake is quick and mean. Not that I will ever find out as I wouldn't shake his hand even for a large sum of money. Anyway, he will end up in Saudi Arabia with Clinton and Carter, the two most disastrous presidents America has ever had.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 9:32 pm

verity you may enjoy this..

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2Im-8EZWCwc

Windmill dave does live amongst social housing, he lives in north ken and its truley awful there.
Something that never ceases to amaze me about London, people living in a house that costs several millions with tramps for neighbours.
Cheshire, Im coming home.
Leo sayer is in the Big brother house , he is very unwell, cant wait for him to burst into tears (+:

Anonymous Anonymous said... 9:40 pm

I never had you down as a Big Brother man PH.

I use it as a way to get more blogging time in while Mrs Slicker is occupied!

Blogger Croydonian said... 9:40 pm

Degree or no degree, there will always be people who have their heads turned by the rich, powerful or otherwise alpha. I don't think anyone could think Lewinsky was anything worse than young and naive. think it shows a backbone of steel that she has not changed her surname.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 10:03 pm

I think we can close this subject by paraphrasing paraplegic pornoghrapher larry flyntt
"if she has snapped her thong at me I would have boned her in a second"
wisw ords

Anonymous Anonymous said... 10:42 pm

Brighton's parking meters are getting the treatment.

Vandals blow up two more meters. The latest explosions took place on Saturday December 30 2006 and Tuesday January 2.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 11:19 pm

Croydonian - She was only in her early 20s and was working in the centre of the universe - the White House - and she caught the attention of the President. Of course she was going to be thrilled to bits. And Clinton is such a nasty piece of work - the last word in opportunism. Actually, it hadn't occurred to me before, but you are right to note that she has never changed her last name. And no matter my opinion of the LSE, they don't hand out degrees like candy (as far as I know) and she has just got her Master's there. So she doesn't lack mental wattage.

Actually, I heard her interviewed on the Beeb once and she was bright and witty. At one point in the conversation, the interviewer asked her, "What would you do if you were married and your husband called and said he was bringing 10 people home for dinner?" And she said, "Make reservations."

Blogger Croydonian said... 11:26 pm

And they do say that Clinton lights up a room and makes anyone he talks to feel like they are the only person who matters. As the old crack goes, if you can fake sincerity, you've got it made.

And indeed, the LSE is a school of deserved academic reknown. It always makes the UK top five or so along with Oxbridge, Imperial and my alma mater, UCL.

Phitch - I read that David Hasselhoff was going to be walking into Big Brother House. I'm sure you would have let us know if he had. I've always thought he was a jerk.

Blogger Croydonian said... 11:36 pm

Having checked, it is a sad selection of talentless Z listers plus Ken Russell. No Hasselhoff.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 11:44 pm

ken russell & leo sayer?
plus a scouse WAG ?
Fun fun fun

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:10 am

Well, I would have included David Hasselhoff among the Z-listers, right down there with Tony Blair and David Blunkett.

I have known Southern boys like Clinton - who often make their careers in politics, oddly enough - and they put enormous effort into charming one. My boss and I lunched with Governor Edwards at the Governor's Mansion in Louisiana (Baton Rouge is the state capital). Just us. Not a luncheon, per se.

And he was simply delightful and terribly funny and responsive and put himself out hugely to entertain us. As is the fate of most Louisiana governors, he's in the big house now, doubtless wearing an ankle chain, but he was a typical southern boy politician. (And he told very funny jokes. I wish I could remember one.) Clinton is cut from the same cloth.

Jimmuh Cahda was a southern boy but without the charm.

Blogger Croydonian said... 12:18 am

I was not hailing Hasselhoff as a great actor, but at least his is a familiar name.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:47 am

Oh, pride is stung, eh, Croydonian?

Statement: No one would suspect you, I guarantee, of thinking Hasselhoff was a great actor.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:49 am

Hass-I have greatly enjoyed this mighty thespian chiefly in his role as a gormless backgrop to bouncy women chasing things along the beach.

Anyway I prefer the John Wayne school of "acting" to the Dustin Hoffman ACTING

and i am the worst insomniac

Blogger Croydonian said... 1:03 am

V - Nooh. I was just offering up clarification. Meanwhile, thank you for the vote of confidence. Anyway, actors who impress me : Pacino, De Niro (before he got lazy) and Sean Penn.

N - Know the story about Hoffman and Olivier from Marathon Man?

Anonymous Anonymous said... 6:29 am

Yes (really)...try acting ..you mean.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:16 pm

See what you mean by meandering.....

Down here on the coast the Sussex Speed Camera Partnership are peddling the same drivel about mindless vandalism. As you say, far from it. We had one taken out in Billinghurst with a chain saw and it has never been replaced. There are paint sprayers at work, but sadly nothing as spectacular as the Belgian/Dutch (sorry, can't remember which exactly) vandals feted on TV a few years ago by J.Clarkson who variously burned/exploded/foamed every Gatso they could find.

Blogger Croydonian said... 12:50 pm

K - we all love a good meander round here. At least money cameras are now yellow rather than camouflaged, which is something.
