Trouble across the Taiwan Strait

Is Taiwan seeking 'independence' or not? President Chen Shui-bian's New Year speech contained this little gem: "Taiwan is a part of the world. It is not a part of China.". The 'People's Republic' of China has got fearfully hot under the collar about that, although fighting words translated from Mandarin to English perhaps lose something in translation: "Chen intends to unreasonably restrict cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, worsen the atmosphere of cross-strait relations, and ruin the peaceful and stable development of cross-strait ties". More here

My preferred solution to all things Chinese would be a variation on the '97 plan cooked up bored financiers in the City, whereby Hong Kong made a reverse takeover of the 'People's Republic', while Tibet performed an MBO etc.

James Higham had an excellent post yesterdya on the global strategy of China. Taiwan as ever is high on their list.

I don't know why; I visited on a business trip once, complete industrial hellhole full of ugly people eating terrible food.

Leave them to their own devices I say.
