The GMB does not approve of venture capitalism

I cannot say that I check the GMB site for confirmation of shared ideology on a regular basis, but it is most exercised about how VC firm Permira handled Little Chef cafes and Travellodge hotels during its stewardship. It sold them for more than they had paid! It increased prices! Pass the smelling salts.

Next week GMB comes down hard on ebay professionals....

the sooner we get the recession out of the way the sooner we can shut these-'everyone should have a govt job'---types up.

driving in this AM,it was vexing me greatly that the bloody welsh and Scots get so much out of govt and we get so little.Same with govt workers. There was a good thread on Devils Kitchen about NHS pay and the fact that they are on comparatively good money.Obviously, talk to most of them and they think it's shit etc but then why don't they leave?Because they know it's a good screw

Same with teachers and Policemen Rigger and thats before the pension.I also think a reccession is coming and it will be house prices and negative equity that will be the main problem . We have assumed that boom bust economics were gone . I have feeling they are defferred .

BTW did you notice how important I am ( see Praguetory)...just mentioning it

Before we even get started on the gold plated pensions, the holidays and the mysterious ability of public sector staff to be ill with far greater regularity than the rest of us.

That Broon had done away with the economic cycle was always nonsense on stilts, but the Dismal One will insist on believing his own hype.

A few years ago I worked for Sir James Goldsmith. I remember being shown a video when he was in front of a US committee who were really not happy about him wanting to take over the Goodyear tyre company.

It was put to him that he only wanted to take over the company to make a profit. And his reply, "I can think of no other reason for being in business".

Those damned capitalists.

off on a tangent
I recall seeing an episode of "question time" this was during the late 80's early 90's The isse being discussed was the release of "The lovers guide" video
The first time the BBFC had cleared a film featuring penetrative sex.
The magnificent Sir Teddy taylor was against its release.

He stated that there was a "danger" that "perverts" would use it to masturbate over !
DUH!

TT bought me a drink once. Nice of him given that he is a teetotaller.

RIGGER-I may be pushing the "couldn`t be worse" paradigm to its limits ... but I think it probably still works.

Thanks Croydonian, will link to this

I can't help the tone of this release is just bizarre, even for a union.

The seem to be railing against the fact that Permira bought a company, added shareholder value through restructuring, and sold it at a profit.

Their complaint isn't even at the *level* of the profit (which, at less than 9% per year, is hardly excessive) but that the company made one at all.

And what of their members' interests? They acknowledge that jobs were lost but this is relegated to a single sentence in the second to last paragraph.

Completely bonkers!

Cheers

The suggestion that the owners had gone out of their way to sack disabled staff struck me as hugely suspect too.
