Language, truth and not much logic....

Monday, November 10, 2008
From KL's New Straits Times:

"Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today told non-Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) not to challenge the National Fatwa Council’s credibility.

He said it was unfair to challenge or dispute a fatwa issued by the council purely on logic because it could create confusion among the people".

(NB - the NFC looks to be a comparatively benign organisation, and does not appear to specialise in delivering Iranian-style death threats).

Perhaps Hamidi should be done with it and tell the Malayans not to worry their pretty little heads about anything. I seem to recall reading an extract of a radical feminist text that held that logic was inescapably phallocratic and therefore should always be discounted if it clashed with a feminist argument.

Opening a family-sized can of worms

At least they just have in KL:

"Malaysia's Islamic opposition party has urged the government to cancel a concert by Avril Lavigne, saying the Canadian singer's on-stage moves are “too sexy,” an official said Monday".

...

A spokesman for the concert's organizer, Galaxy Group, denied that Lavigne's show had any “negative elements.”

Shades of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show all those years ago.

If the United Kingdom was Malaysia's 14th state....

Things could look quite different, judging from this speech by Dr Nazrin Shah:

"The Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah said the fight against corruption should see good governance with figures in authority being qualified for such positions. He said the corrupt should be held in contempt by society. "Those with a chequered past or clear evidence of questionable morality should be prevented from taking office".

And if that wasn't setting the bar a tad on the high side for the likes of Mandelson, Prescott and other members of the rogues' gallery, "Only Malaysians who [are] capable, hard working, bold and scrupulously honest [should be] allowed to serve in positions of responsibility".

Erm, who'd be left in British public life?

The Raja himself has a rather more impressive CV than the average Crown Prince: a PPE from Oxford and both a Masters and a Ph.D from Harvard.

Mind you, his calling card must be a bit lacking in white space: "Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Raja Muda Perak Darul Ridzuan Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Ibni Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin D.K., D.K.II (Selangor), D.K.S.A, S.P.C.M, S.P.T.S, S.P.M.P. (Perlis), Ph.D (Harvard)".

Setting the bar a little too high?

Wednesday, July 25, 2007
The Malyasian Deputy PM is none too impressed with that nation's bloggers, and had reminded them of section 121b of the penal code: "Section 121b deals with offences against the authority of the king, ruler or Yang DiPertua Negeri and carries a maximum penalty of life in prison".

He added "In the name of freedom, these websites allow the broadcast of slander, lies and swearing, the use of harsh, degrading language and racial slurs without regard for the reader or those concerned".
(Good job nothing like that happens on this side of the planet, eh?)

However, it is what the Deputy PM thinks blogs should be doing that is the interesting bit: "
We want blogs to be clean, a place to obtain accurate information, a reference point for honest opinion, not a platform to abuse and slander people".

I would wish him good luck, but for the fact this seems to be more about attacking freedom of speech than trying to raise the tone...
