Home Secretary - getting back to where we started from is a triumph
"And we are making progress: Violent crime at its lowest for a decade". Source
Being liberal, I will pretend that I believe whichever set of crime figures the government puts its name to this week And let me think - just which party was in power in September 1997? And who has been the MP for Redditch through out that period, so she is unlikely to have forgotten?
Isn't this government wonderful?
(And this exciting low takes us to circa two and a half million reported violent crimes per annum against circa 40m English and Welsh adults. So you only have a one in 16 chance of being a victim).

Never ends, does it?

Gosh, this is a classic,
"And we are making progress: Violent crime at its lowest for a decade".
I suppose that in the Orwellian 1984 world that is new Britain we are to believe that new Labour only started in 2007 when Brown became leader. THEY have no responsibility for what happened in the last 10 years.

Hang on a minute. The Home Office web site states that 600,000 violent crimes were recorded by the police in 1998 and that just under 1.2 million were recorded for 2006. The definition of what constitutes a violent crime was unchanged from 1998 to 2006.
Can anybody explain how a doubling of violent crime in 8 years is spun into the lowest level for a decade?

Because we don't have journalists who would point this out. Or an effective Opposition who might do the same.
And no-one in NuLab cares if the proles can figure it out for themselves....

In my humble way I have attempted to tease this point out (was asked to make a speech to a meeting of Croydon 'community stakeholders', attended by Borough Police Commander and Deputy Leader of Council with responsibility for 'Safety & Cohesion' (sic), a Tory BTW).
Made all the points, plus a few more besides, was enthusiastically received by the assembled 'stakeholders'
Then the worthy copper rises to speak.
"well, the fact remains, crime is down and we should be very proud of this ..."
Then the worthy Deputy Leader rises to speak.
"well, the fact remains, crime is down, not that I'm complacent you understand ...*
THE FACT IS, it is clearly mandatory to trot out this crap on every occasion, if you want your performance-related bonus / performance-related government grant etc etc.
