Automatic knighthoods for travel agents
It used to be the case, but apparently no more:
"British ambassadors and high commissioners who help arrange the Queen's state visits will no longer automatically receive knighthoods. The decision follows a streamlining in the number of knighthoods being awarded". (Telegraph, print only)
And some people wonder why I want the entire non-military honours system scrapped, bag, baggage, Bath and Garter.

N - I do not believe they are tranferable. Lord Newmania of Islington has a pleasant ring to it though.
V - Probably worth trying.

A friend of mine who shall remain nameless has a surname very similar to that of a noted banking dynasty, and when mumbled it is very helpful for booking tables at high end restaurants.

The honours rot set in under Major _ as it did in so many things: remember his abolition of the British Empire Medal (BEM)? Now everyone who would have got a BEM gets an MBE and so on up the chain.... Yet another form of grade inflation... I'd be inclined to say that you get a peerage for much less these days if cash didn't figure so large in so many peerage awards. Consider the risible mediocrity Baroness Uddin _ whose sole claim to fame before getting togged up in ermine was to have been a sub-standard 'chair' of the social services cttee in Tower Hamlets/ Newham or somewhere equally ghastly..
