Where your tax money goes, pt 347
On a feature film in Scots Gaelic:
"The film will shoot on a very modest budget - £655,000. Financed by BBC Alba, Serbheis Nam Meadhannan Gaidhlig (GMS), Scottish Screen and the Glasgow Film Office with support from Gaelic College Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and Highlands and Islands Film Commission. Young Films is handling International Sales. The film will be shooting in Skye until July and will be ready for release in UK cinemas in 2007". Source.
By current reckoning there are 58,652 speakers of Scots Gaelic, so that's an £11.17 cost per speaker. I suspect that the international distributors will not be plagued by incessant phone calls given the 500-1000 speakers in Nova Scotia and the approximate intelligibility of Scots Gaelic to Irish Gaelic speakers.
(Housekeeping footnote - I may have to activate the wretched letter recognition business as I am getting rather too many spam postings)

N1 C. Do you mind if I say modest budget my arse?
With that budget I could have a film that will be "ready for release in UK cinemas in 2007".
Mine would probably stand a better chance of being shown (or am I being cynical?).

I made a million - pretending to make tiny minority movies funded by the EU - want to know how? Take a look at my site www.mutleythedogsdayout.blogspot.com and you can as well!

MtD - sounds like a winner. There are an awful lot of speakers of Croydonese, and they are sadly underserviced by the entertainment industry.

If you think Gaelic is economically unworthy, perhaps you should stop taking oil and natural gas from the north sea.
