Or it could be seen like that in this case. The Hanoi regime has sentenced three Americans (of Vietnamese origin) to 15 months in prison for 'terrorism'. The report in Le Monde is not the last word in clarity in explaining quite what these people had done, but it seems to boil down to arguing for the overthrow of the Hanoi regime, if necessary by force.

Freedom House rates Vietnam 7 (lowest) for political rights, and 5 (up from 2005's 6) for civil liberties. In tems of press freedom, it scores 79, compared to 19 for Australia and 83 for China. Rather unnervingly, "a 1999 law requires journalists to pay damages to individuals or groups found to have been harmed by press articles, even if they are true".
