Diversity in the fire brigades
Labour are all for it, apparently, and Fire Minister Angela Smith (great job title) reckons:
"I believe it will become increasingly difficult for Fire and Rescue Services to be effective in their community work, if the make up of the workforce does not reflect the community it serves."
What do firefighters do? They put out fire and rescue cats from trees etc.
"How can you understand the community, build up the deep trust needed and reach the most vulnerable and isolated groups?"
Get in the fire engine, turn on the siren and go to the fire, the cat in the tree etc maybe?
More guff of the same sort here.
Am I being woefully naive in not being even remotely bothered about the man or woman inside the uniform when they are pointing a hose at my burning roof, taking an axe to a door or coaxing Tiddles down from the nearest tree?

err...no!
more to the point, given the work there is a crucial need to be able to do weight bearing work,ie carrying bodies.it's like the police making women officers patrol no their own.some are tough as nails but ssome get a kicking because they don't have the physical strength for the work

A mate of mine served with the USAF fire service, and has made the point that a woman only needs to be as strong as the weakest man on the team, which seems fair.

I don't care whether they're white, black, brown, gay - anything, but I do not believe women have the muscular strength to carry adults out of burning buildings. So, given the difference in musculature between men and women - with men having the strongest chest, shoulder and arm muscles - it should be a man.
This "diversity" crap needs to be shot with a silver bullet while wearing a string of garlic and a stake driven through its heart. The same goes for Angela Smith.

My father retired from the London Fire Service a few years ago, bemoaning the fact that the he was see far more recruits physically unable to do the job. I haven't really got a problem with diversity, but if you replaced 'Fire and Rescuse Service' with 'Houses of Parliament' I reckon Ms Smith would have a point.

Well, I have a problem with diversity because it is artificial and pointless unless used as a rod to beat the backs of the indigenes. It also belittles ethnic minorities who got their posts through their own abilities and not through an artificial and pointless quota.
Diversity in the Houses of Parliament, Paul, would be just as divisive. We want the best governance not a diversity picnic. I don't care if my MP is black, white or gay, atheist, Christian or Jewish - as long as they are on my side and share my views.

Last year i read that the army had been told by the HSE to put hand rails on certain sections of assault courses , just in case somebody fell over.
Maybe the HSE could f*** off to Iraq and tell those nasty people to stop shooting at soldiers, somebody could get hurt.

C - do you think you could get done for being to being an accessory when your of your contributors commits an act of violence. Just something for you to sleep on.

PH - beggars belief, doesn't it?
P - I hope not... I don't go soliciting for violence, that's for sure.

black, white or gay, atheist, Christian or Jewish - as long as they are on my side and share my views.---Excellent . This should be in school books.
The use of Women for crowd control has on several occasions been disastrous . The point is not just the physique or lack of it but the rioters perception of it . I was not aware until today that members of the BNPare banned from the prison service and effectively banned from the police. I do not like the BNP one bit . I am not a racist , I am not a Socialist and I `m not that fussed about “Britain”. I do not myself see that their beliefs are worse than the Muslims who believe death is to good for homosexuals and would agree with the BNP with their bonkers Zionist conspiracy theories..

Private Eye has a good story this week about the Scilly Isles where the FBU have been in touch.
Not enough diversity on the ethnic front in their station alledgedly.
Apparently a difficult one to address as there aren't any on the Isles to employ...

So much stupidity, so little reason...
CU - Yes, I was reading that just now and shaking my head at it. Following the diversity logic, it would be foolish to have non-Caucasians fighting fires, rescuing cats etc on Tresco as they would be insufficently culturally sensitive to the needs of the locals....
