Patronising the proles

Beverly 'I haven't seen 'Brass Eye', but I'll still condemn it' Hughes, has come up with a new way of lording it over the proles 'youngsters from disadvantaged homes'. If they are, so to speak, talent spotted by teachers as lacking '"soft skills" like communication, problem-solving, initiative and leadership', they can look forward to sundry jollies to theatres (the Das Kapital play if it makes it to England, eh?). There will, naturally, be no additional funding for this. Full details here.

This looks like yet another attempt to nationalise parenting and to infantilise the populace in general. After all, why bother attempting to better yourself or your children if Big Nanny will come along and do it? Meanwhile, the last time I looked, libraries were still free, as are many museums. And I won't get going on the Workers Edcuation Association etc etc. Perhaps there will be a reverse version for dim bourgeois children, teaching them to hold cutlery incorrectly, appreciate the hyper reality of soap operas, laugh at the puns in The Sun etc etc so that they will better fit in at certain workplaces.

Bev, as she likes to be called, has a degree in social science.

I'll have a mull, but I suspect it has already been done to death . I'm quids on Joe, but I seem likely to lose on the GOP holding the Senate.....

Sort of relatedly .....on cultural snobbery

There was (to me) an outrageously snotty bit in the Standard about Classical Music Blogs . One fellow has established himself as a good commentator and become pre eminent. The journalist commented that when his reality was discovered ,he was an estate agent and ,therefore , obviously knew nothing about it . NOT OBVIOUS I suggest. It always staggers me just how little of some elite language people from certain social groups feel is necessary to start imagining they are superior.

On the other hand isn`t there something to be said for jollies to the theatre . I can`t see a lot of harm in it and such thngs have always gone on . New label only methinks

It is a sad state of affairs when people's works are judged not on what they have done, but who they are. It happens all the time, in both directions, and is altogther woeful.

All very true, but the idea that teachers would be singling out the talented but socially unpolished for special treatment is all rather icky.

completely off topic.the reason i come to this blog is that it covers a wide range of topics from different countries.I find it fascinating to be able to learn about French,US,Canuck etc politics and then try and relate it back to how much I hate maude/DC/Jenkin and co.really it tests me!!

it does mean though, that sometimes things get missed out.The sacking off Jenkin was commented on elsewhere and whilst Iain Dale edits out my rants against maude etc,I had a go on guido.

I'm with Suttonian,in being surprised we had no coverage of the US results. It's your blog C, but besides coming here to agree with Verity and laugh at the cabaret, I also come here so that I can blag a conversation on world politics and sound erudite and clever.get on the game

whats the full sp on the US.

daily mail coverage was limited to Hillary-whos gonna be Pressident for the third time and pelosi being a mother of five.

what about that Lieberman fella?

Icky is right . In fact teachers , of whom I know lots , will take their favourites .These are the odd ones that are not trying to stab the most of the time . Or asking their parents to .

Every single educational initiative founders on the rock of the NUT and someone might at least register this reality. The few teachers trying to do a good job are very soon enmired by the jobsworth culture

There is a cavernous reality gap in the whole subject

oh and those leftis liek Bev want to keep as many on benefits as possible and as many as thick as possible.a well educated electorate would turn on those idiots---and DC too, mind.they're all the same over here at the minute.

RM - your wish is my command (within reasonable limits...). I'll see what I can do with the US elections.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:13 pm

Are we all telling the mighty C what to do with his blog now then. Goody .

I would like the delicate soufflé of international and domestic tit bits , to , be varied , on occasion with straightforward political debating points. I would also like more pictures of naked women. I would like an in depth profile of me as running series. My qualifications for offering this advice are clear form the pathetic blog I do which no -one ever bothers to read.

Perhaps there is a conclusion to be drawn here but somehow I can’t see it.

I would be interested in US analysis because unlike some of your contributors I `m a bit ignorant of abroad and might learn something

Blogger Croydonian said... 12:20 pm

N - I will mull. No naked women I'm afraid, this is a 'family blog'.

Blogger The Hitch said... 1:08 pm

Mr Mania
C is obviously some kind of catalyst. He has created a forum for a collection of bitter and twisted like minded individuals to let off steam, surely an achievement?
As to naked women I am all in favour of that, I have a large collection of p2p sourced porn that I would be happy to share with you all.

Bev has a degree in "Social Scienced". Whenever they want to edlevate an empty, pointless, phony, incredibly easy subject sound important, they add the word 'science'.

Bev is not a scientist by any stretch. The sciences require rigour, intense dedication and ability to concentrate at stratospheric levels. This is not our Bev. I have no idea who she is, but I can tell from that one sentence that she is a worthless thick'ead.

She doesn't have a degree in Social "Science". She has a degree in interfering.

Sadly your brilliant idea re, reverse snobbery classes is already in action nationwide.

It's called 'university', where middle class retards get places ahead of bright proles on the basis they had better schooling so passed exams.

Or am I missing something?
