Spot the smear
The Observer writes about Hans 'Tetra Pak' Rausing giving money to Oliver Letwin's office.
"Secretive Tetra Pak billionaire joins list of foreign-born moguls backing the Tories".
Dr Hans Rausing, the secretive Swedish billionaire industrialist who created the Tetra Pak packaging empire, has given £100,000 to the Westminster office of Oliver Letwin, the shadow Home Secretary.Rausing, who has faced questions over his complex tax-avoidance arrangements, is Britain's fourth-richest individual, with a fortune valued at almost £5bn, has lived in England since 1982".
How much more innuendo could they fit into less than 100 words? Naturally there are no mentions of donations to Labour by individuals not in possession of a British birth certificate.
Funny how Swedes, French etc are 'European' when it suits the agenda of the left, but become 'foreign' when it does not.....

Hmmm, let me count the ways:
1. "Secretive";
2. In the very next sentence: "secretive Swedish billionaire industrialist"; (not just a secretive billionaire, but an INDUSTRIALIST!)
3. "foreign born moguls" (I love that one!)
4. "faced questions";
5. "createdthe Tetra Pak packaging empire";
6. "complex tax-avoidance arrangements" (In other words, he has accountants, unlike, I am sure, The Observer's owners.)
7. "has lived in England since 1982". (Probably in hiding from the Swedish tax authorities or otherwise on the lam.)
Indian citizen Lakshmi Mittal is the Mogul's mogul, being the third richest man on earth after Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, owns steel companies all over the world, foreign born, not a British citizen, has lived in England a number of years, gave cash to the Labour Party ... perhaps he's just not secretive enough to get the Observer's attention.

Just magnificent. Thank you.

OTOH, perhaps I was being too harsh and it was simply a commendable effort by the Observer's editors to make a Swede look interesting.

Is this his first donation to Conservatives?

Interesting question, Ellee Seymour.

The generous Mr Rausing gave the thick end of £200 000 in 2004, according to the Electoral Commission's site.

Further to the above, this makes a second fundamental factual error in the report, as the writer comments: "Rausing...has never made his political loyalties known until now".
Still, taking 30 seconds to check the public record is clearly too much to ask...
