Survey o' the day
Yes, it's from France again. It isn't my fault that Gallup, Yougov et al are rarely commissioned to poll we Britons on matters as interesting as those that our Gallic chums are.
Anyway, Roger Karoutchi having come out, magazine VSD polled the Plain People of France as to whether they would be prepared to vote for an 'out' candidate for the Elysée, and what a (broadly) progressive and liberal lot they are, with 75% saying that they would. Compare this with the ethnic question, where 80% would vote for a black candidate, 72% for an Asian candidate and 58% for a Maghrebi candidate. I would guess that any gay French Algerians with political ambitions should just throw in the towel now to avoid disappointment later.
Drilling down into the demographic detail, the least supportive are the 75+ cohort, manual workers, the retired, manual labourers and the unemployed. Right wingers are less keen than lefties, but note the 22% of Trots who would not. Geographically, easterners are the least keen, and south westerners the most supportive.
However, sneaky blighters that they are, the pollsters have also asked, 'Do you think that the French are ready to vote for a gay presidential candidate?'. Experience suggests that people who are shy about admitting their own opinions on something will leap at the opportunity to express it when it is being done so in the name of a wider group. So, at the risk of being grotesquely unfair, some highlights from the responses to that:
No - 18-24 year olds. 76%
No - All Gauls - 61%
No - Communists - 68%
No - Easterners - 77%
No - Westerners - 76%
