Croydon Council's rather apologetic approach to encouraging tourism

I imagine I will be safe in assuming that tourist websites for most places do not mention other places in the second sentence, but Croydon's does:

"Croydon has something for everyone, shopping, entertainment, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, heritage, parks and open spaces parks and open spaces. The town is an ideal base for exploring London and South East England with excellent public transport and road links. By train, central London is just 20 minutes whilst Brighton can be reached in under an hour".

I have an image in my head of a 1970's sound track over a scratchy film of women in white kinky boots and crimpelene dresses walking around a shopping centre whilst a transatlantic voice over says
"Croydon , its on the move"
duhduhdudh daah!

Does Croydon need tourists? It seems greedy to steal these assets from the more needy nearby districts like Surrey.

Although I am a regular visitor, perhaps I am not alone in thinking Croydon is not an ideal holiday destination?

bit like my hometown of Southampton come to think of it!

"open spaces parks and open spaces"

Spoilt for choice really.

Peter - Yes, I can see that in my mind's eye.

CU - you could be on to something there. I ma yet to see any camera festooned tourists marvelling at the Big C.

Matt - Give me a shout next time you are up here.

BB - My transcription error...

With the greatest of respect to a resident, Croydonian and having driven through a number of times, is Croydon - er - a tourist resort?

Blogger Croydonian said... 9:56 am

Erm, not really. Unless one wanted to marvel at quite how ugly some of the buildings on Wellesley Road are.

Vikki - Very kind of you to say so. Thanks.
