Californians say no to drugs, but yes to cough medicine

I suppose most of us have a mental gallery of visual cliches for drug users, but judging from this report in the LA Times, my gallery needed updating, as for teenagers in the Golden State cough medicine is as popular a high as cocaine, more so than crank, acid and ecstacy if far less so than cannabis. Well gag me with a spoon.

Meanwhile, blogging will be light this morning because of work - which will insist on intruding into the best ordered of lives.

"Since 1999, teen abuse of Coricidin pills, Robitussin syrup and other common medications has risen 10-fold, data from the California Poison Control System show."

Why are they investigating? What's Calpol not telling us?

Croydian is Angela Rippon?? Blimey Newmania, good link to this blog.

Personally I'd like to see Peter Hitchens in feathers and sequins doing some high kicks - how about it PH?

cough syrup is rather popular not only in california but in boarding schools as well// its popularity I believe mainly arises from the ease of availability and value for money.. though I must say you have to down half a bottle for a decent effect and even then it is but a mediocre high... And I dont know about this.. someone was telling me about it.. :)

Must say that caning cough syrup does not sound like much fun. A friend once tried smoking banana skins, and was unimpressed.

And I am NOT Angela Rippon.

FYI Cough mixture has a long and dishonourable history as a medium of drug abuse: Heroin (capital 'H') was originally the brand name of a cough mixture launched by Bayer in Germany in the 1890s. It got its name because in those days before clinical trials, drugs used to be tested on any old vat-stirrer in the pharma company and they reported it made them feel 'heroisch' (heroic). It (diamorphine, to use its generic name) works as a cough mixture thru suppressing respiratory function. Which is why it kills in overdose: it just stops you breathing. Here ends today's pharmacology lesson!

Well, I'll be. I knew H was a German concoction and so forth, but that it was a cough cure is astonishing. Speaking of which, I've had a cough for a couple of weeks...
