Headline o' the day

And it is a winner:

"There will be no Armageddon".

The denial of the End of Days comes from Yury Zaitsev writing for Russian news agency Novosti, although at the end it notes 'The opinions expressed in this article are the author's and do not necessarily represent those of RIA Novosti'.

So, truly the apocalypse is, or is not, upon us.

(The item is actually about the launching of a Large Hadron Collider at CERN)

Just thought I'd add this, from those nice people at xkcd, who have a creative commons licence for their stuff:

But there is an unbelievably remote possibility that Armageddon will follow the launch of the super collider and Zaitsev admits this. In the same way at the culmination of the Manhattan Project there was a remote possibility that the exploding of an atomic bomb could result in a chain reaction that consumed the world. Manifestly, it didn't happen.

Of course, it would be ridiculous to prevent scientific advance on the basis of the miniscule probability of disaster which Zaitsev describes. However, under the "precautionary principle" - stop everything just in case - so beloved of our rulers (cf the reasoning behind 42-day detention without trial and almost every elf 'n' safety regulation you can imagine) surely it would be consistent for the government to seek to stop the collider being launched and to mothball it for millennia - after all, you never know . . .

The good news is that the universe would presumably self-destruct so quickly that it wouldn't hurt too much.

So, now might be a good time to max out the credit card etc.

Well, if there is no Armageddon I shall be bitterly disappointed. I had been hoping that one or two people would be getting their come-uppance - come The Day.

Oh! It's been called off, has it? I was just about to go shopping for an outfit! (As you point out, Croydonian, price no object.)
