"Car bombs do not constitute terrorist activity"
In spite of all evidence to the contrary, that is what a German court has decided. The German beaks have been examining this question in the light of the anti G8 protests last year, and under German law it would appear that "A terrorist act is one that causes significant damage to the state", rather than to one of the individual Länder, it being Mecklenburg-Vorpommern where the protest / riot took place.
I wonder if the reaction would have been the same if it had been Dusseldorf or Frankfurt in the firing line rather than a small town in the former DDR.
Meanwhile, the German far left thinks this is all just great.

Labels: Germany, Law and order, war on terror
That is absolutely shocking.
Surely a car bomb that god forbid goes of in front of their parliament would constitute damage to the state?
Of course the lefties love it - they'll do anything to mitigate terrorism.

The German legal system has some very odd attitudes, but this one is the oddest I've heard. Perhaps a case of wanting to be able to say "we don't have terrorism here thanks to our Good European way of life"?

A very good question.

The Oklahoma City bombing was carried out using a car bomb.
I imagine that the 168 families of the victims would be prepared to stand up in court and say that it was terrorism - plus every other right-minded individual.
Judicial lunacy.

This looks like a throwback to Hegel, and the idea that only the State is important, and everyone is subserviant to the State.
People didn't seem to matter much then, either.

I assume that all the evidence collected is now worthless and cannot be used in any trial, even by the landers?
At least the group faced some disruption in the lead up to and during the summit. I hope.
