And you thought the Olympics were ghastly...
Stand by for the UK School Games, to be held each year for the next five years:
"Launched last year, they will be held every year until 2012 and are designed to replicate the feel of events like the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, with opening and closing ceremonies and athletes' villages".
Expensive and flashy opening / closing ceremonies are toe-curlingly awful, so I hate to think quite how grim low rent local versions will be. And the other interesting bit? This has been announced by the Would Be Lord Protector. Doesn't he have his hands full with plotting and cooking up ways to complicate the tax system and generally beggaring the populace?

I have been thinking abou the Olympics and al th endless discusion abou the budget which ( according to private Eye ) was known in advance and mistrepresented in a variety of childishly simple ways.
Bu the main thing with all sport is whether you win or not .I am so nauseated by Blair anmd livingstone taking the credit I find myself almost hoping , as seems likely , that we will achieve nothing .
I cannot remeber a time when athletics was in such dire straights and I have not noticed any contenders coming through
