Fear and loathing on the other side of the Pond
Harris has been polling Americans on the power of the US, the level of respect it gets, and whether the country should involve itself more or less in world events. I cannot provide a direct link as the site requires registration (PRnewswire.com), but I am not making this up.
Asked 'How powerful do you feel that the U.S. is compared to other nations?', men (63%), Republicans (73%) and Echo Boomers (18-30, 62%) were most likely to think the US powerful, with 'not powerful' most common among matures (62+, 21%) and Democrats (20%).
As to 'How well-respected do you feel that the U.S. is throughout the world?', the figures are not enormously comforting for the Americans, with total not well respected reaching 73% overall, and Boomers (43-61, 76%) and Democrats (87%) going further still.
Questioned as to whether the US should engage more or less overseas, the interventionists - relatively speaking - are post grads (23%) and Republicans (28%), although I do not doubt that 'involvement in world events' was taken by some to mean wars and by others to mean sending the Peace Corps. Democrats (71%) and those without college education (66%) tended most to isolationism.
Should the US withdraw in on itself, we will end up with a much more dangerous world.

Actually America always acts out of an aggressive self interest (as do most nations most of the time), so there is no chance of them withdrawing in on themself as regards their foreign policy.
They are already under the rule of a highly isolationist regime, of course - and yes, George Bush has made the world a much more dangerous place. So I guess you are right really.
