From the wonderful people who brought you Concorde and the Channel Tunnel...

Yet more money pits, as Liberation reports, not that they see it like it that, natch.

"A free electron laser, a biobank, underwater observatories, a supercomputer, files digitized for social sciences, a nuclear reactor... All judged essential for competing with the US, and the financing for must get a direct contribution from the EU's budget".

Lots more detail here. Although be advised that the photo of the chairman of ESFRI, John Wood looks as though he has laser beams for eyes, and is intent on drilling holes in the skulls of page browsers.

Still, why bother about commercial viability if there's the opportunity to extort money from the tax payer in pursuit of parity / duplication with our Uncle Sam. I fear this is going to cost us all. A LOT.

John Wood looks like he has dropped acid in that photo. Perhaps the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures will advocate replacing the Anglo-Saxon internet with the oh-so-gallic Minitel system...for example.

The most stunning example of , "how the hell did that get there " is the Galileo project. There are people who monitor such things that say that the military linking of surveillance technology on an EU basis will make it increasingly difficult to act outside the EU in the future. I notice the long predicted satellite monitoring of car movement is inching closer. NWO oooohooohoo spooky

Would be nice to get on the payroll though . Perhaps it would be a ticket to wealth and "circles" a la Praguetory

By the way update . If anyone noticed my comment of the warmth of the middle ages . Much about this in the telegraph today. Christopher Monckton. Its uncanny how clever I am sometimes. Natch

I thought that the Channel Tunnel itself was:

a) financed privately

b) an Anglo-French intergovernmental project, not a European Community one...

Am I wrong?

You are of course right. The reference was a broader one to euro projects rammed through under governmental pressure.

The French national debt is 66% of GDP comapred to the UKs 43% , an ex director of the French trasur reckons that L be France wil need IMF handouts if the carry on spending at the rate that they are .
No doubt the pillocks will as they elect yet another comie president.
Makes me almost grateful for mad Gordon.

PH- Gordo's not "mad" per se. He's just got "pyschological flaws" as blair once put it.

Blogger Rigger Mortice said... 8:23 pm

peter the way gordons going he'll only need another five years and we'll be close enough.at the mo he's borrowing £30 odd billion p.a. above tax receipts.as unemployment rises and we head toward a recession, unemployment will only go higher (claimants up) and tax receipts down.

doom doom doom.

time to buy property!!

These Euro successes, eh? Look at the wonder that is Airbus. So great everyone is trying to bail on it!

Maybe what would be more entertaining is to name one, just one, that worked...

I can't think of any' although maybe the JET will yet save us all.

Gordo's more 'flaws' than the Empire State building, alhtough his watch, disastrous though it has been has involved some basic attempts to balance the books, unlike our Gallic chums, as Peter notes.

Yup, buy land - they ain't making any more of it (bar Dubai), and even the Dutch are abandoning one of their polders to the sea, apparently.

CU - How could I have forgotten all the airborne turkeys - including the Tornado, the Eurofighter....
