If it ain't broke, don't fix it

That's my advice to Inverclyde Council, which covers Greenock and other parts of Renfrewshire.

Anyway, they have decided "to allow voting by SMS text message in its forthcoming housing transfer ballot". This based, supposedly, on the following principle: "Many tenants, particularly younger ones, are likely to be more familiar with voting using text messaging than the post". (Source)

Quite possibly, but are they familiar with holding a pencil and marking an 'X'? What of the secrecy of the ballot, what of the scope for misvoting, what of 'friends' voting for you, what of hacking etc etc etc. Then will the count be scrutinised, election style? And it is a Liberal Democrat council that has cooked this up.

What is a housing transfer ballot?

"The council has agreed to transfer its housing stock to other landlords, if tenants agree, under the Scottish Executive's Community Ownership Programme. The new landlords will have more money to improve the houses, as they will not be repaying outstanding debt at the same level as the council".

Thrilling, huh?

It's always lefties and wannabees who come up ideas they think are "modern", and who want to be seen as frightfully up-to-date.

I see this is an Almo , they have been a disaster and the votes have been rigged .

The reason by the way you cannot by the freehold is that it relates to the block which is to large to organise and contains tenants so. The Council do also make it very difficult but one or two groups in small groups have done so.

The whole area of council consultation was what got my blood to boiling point in the first place. Take the new 20MPH limits they are rolling out across London .( To be policed with new terrifying interconnected state surveillance machines ). They ask each road if they would like the new limit . Of course each road says yes. That does not mean that anyone wants this new intrusion. Everything that bothers me in a fragrant stew.

1 False Consultation
2 Managing opinions in groups so as to avoid democracy
3 Fines
4 Laws
5 Surveillance

Where will it end , all of this has been against the clearly expressed wish of voters at local elections ?In the local rag I saw this remark Councillor Watt will regret “ funds are made unavailable from TFL that we cannot use for any other purpose “ AHA!!! Same old story !!!
Verity might be interested to hear that a Lib Councillor has called for a deeper debate on the Burqa in the local press . Thy have ignored my warnings about Finsbury Park Mosque for a year . Councillor Watts will not like the debate she gets .

Sorry went on a bit

As much as I'd like to blame the Lib Dems they are only taken up a Government scheme

How I yearn for the return of the old south Africa, apparently it was as near to paradise on earth as it was possible to find.
Lots of firearms, good hunting ,low crime rates, cheap domestic labour, beautiful scenery, then of course the bleeding hearts got their way and everybody black and white suffered, as always happens when socialists are allowed to run things.
Maybe one day the blacks will wise up and call for the return of white rule and apartheid.

I predict that, if we had the nerve, which we Westerners don't - but if we ever develop the nerve - we will go in and re-administer our former African colonies.

That the richest nation on planet Earth has failed to feed its people for 60 or 70 years speaks volumes. In fact, here's a volume. Go away and read it. For God's sake, they have gold, uranium, diamonds, practically every mineral known to man, oil, and hugely productive soil that grows just about everything.

Read the volume referred to, sainted P J O'Rourke (pbuh) in his "Eat The Rich" and read why resource wealthy Tanzania is dirt poor while resource pauper Hong Kong is incredibly rich. It's the governance, stupid.

While I'm at it, not another penny of taxpayer money to Africa. Medication for children up to age 16,that's it. After that, the whole damn' continent's on its own.

VERITY I have wondered myself if the point of aid was not to keep Africa an infantile resource for the West . Aid is 10% of GDP sub Sahara and this prevents political development and secondary and tertiary economies, for that reason.

I wouldn`t claim to be desperately well informed on "abroad " I `d be interested to hear your thoughts
