Street Names II

No apologies for returning to this old favourite.. Der Spiegel has been investigating street names in the former DDR and found all sorts of Leninist throwbacks:

Karl Marx strasse / allee / platz etc - 550
Engels (ditto) - 243
Ernst Thalmann (pre war leader of the KPD) is the big winner at 613

Rather more amusing, and infinitely more toe curling are the streets using abbreviations:

"48 DSF Streets commemorate the Society for German-Soviet Friendship, 44 LPG Streets recognize the achievements of the Agricultural Cooperative for Collective Production and 36 MTS Streets celebrate East Germany's Machinery and Tractor Stations".

Anyone fancy taking up residence in one of the 337 "Streets of Youth [that] commemorate the communist cult of youth in work and agriculture".

Meanwhile, apparently only one city in Europe still has anything still named after Stalin. There's a virtual drink in it for anyone who knows. Also, I'd dearly like to know whether there is any truth in the tale of there being a Wong Way in San Francisco, named for an eminent Chinese American.
