'High brow' journos making a hash of their metaphors

Andrew 'General Urko' Rawnsley has been trying to show how street and down wiv ver kids he is by introducing a bit of profanity into his Observer column. However, someone with a better command of colourful metaphors should have told him that it is bonfires (or chips), not parades, that are 'p*issed on'.

Meanwhile, since today is 'be rude to liberal hacks' day, I'm amused that me old china Will Hutton is arguing for an end to a statutory retirement age. For what it is worth, I agree with him, but might this have something to do with "Times winged chariot hurrying near"? Perish the thought, although I have not been able to track down his age...

Hutton's got an incredibly long CV. Hutton was born in 1950(it says so in the copyright details in the American edition of his last book).
But nowhere have I seen anything about his early life, etc. I wonder why he has chosen to be so guarded on his past...He wouldn't be another old boy of Fettes would he?

Yeah, he's kept it all under wraps, hasn't he? The clever money says public school / Oxbridge....

Very much under wraps though a bit of further digging reveals that he is a grad. of Bristol University (BSc Economics and Sociology 1972).
I think you might be right on public school...

Turns out he's a humble grammar school boy, like yours truly.

Maybe he's horribly chippy about not having gone to either the car factory or Fenland poly. Mind you, there are few bores more crashing than those who go on and on and on about having attended one of those places. There is a vile individual I used to work with, who circa 40 years of a career later, still managed to drop the name of his alma mater roughly every five sentences.
