Fun & games with defamation law

The Grauniad has a report of a libel damages win by a Big Brother contestant. Exactly, who cares?

Here, however is the interesting bit. The lawsuit was against the Sunday Sport (note for non-UK readers, this is 'paper' without news - gossip, celebrity stuff, over-detailed sex offence court reports, and lots and lots and lots of 'glamour' pictures. It is basically a loss leader for the proprietor to cross market his porn empire) which makes the comment from the non-entity's lawyer rather amusing:

"The article caused Lesley Sanderson huge distress, humiliation and embarrassment," Hanna Basha, for the law firm Carter Ruck, told the court. "She found it horrific and extremely upsetting, especially knowing that it would be read by her friends and family. She still finds it difficult to go out socially knowing that people have read the false claims about her."

If I were a member of her family I might launch an action myself....

I suppose the nurses outfits are getting skimpier because the of NHS cutbacks!

She was right to contest this story with its false allegations, regardless of which drivel it appeared in. I bet those two guys were paid for their false story, that's why I would like cheque book journalism to be banned.

Ellee, I'm not disputing that she was defamed, I was just having fun with the idea that anyone would be happy at being thought of as a 'Sport' reader....
