Auditors give 'EU books a clean bill of health'

Do they really?

In fact:

"The EU's accounting books have been given a clean bill of health by the European Court of Auditors. The Court also found that the *majority* of EU payments it checked were regular, though errors were still too frequent in some areas, particularly in spending on EU regions and to boost employment (cohesion policy), where grants are managed by national authorities. Outside of this area, the Court estimates that 95% or more of payments are error free".

Thus in the case of regional payments anything up to 49% might be 'irregular'.

So, imagine you are paid weekly, and one in 20 of your payslips is blank. How happy would you be with that?

Meanwhile, those fine people at Open Europe noted that 2007 was the 14th successive year for which the European Court of Auditors will not sign off the EU's accounts.

No doubt the Europhiles will express their concern at this, then promptly go back into hiding.
