Introducing London's least likely troopie groupie
Brace yourselves:
"Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, today announced that he will establish an annual Veterans Day event in London. The first event will take place in Trafalgar Square on Friday 27 June 2008...My aim is that on Veterans' Day every year London pays tribute to all our veterans, the sacrifices they have made and our gratitude to those who have served our country in the Forces or in the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets".
Is this the same Ken Livingstone who used to consort with people who thought killing British soldiers on active service was just fine? Yes, I believe it is.

What's next? Public rejection of socialism?
I note that our incurious media never refer to his 1989 classic "If voting changed anything they'd make it illegal." If a Tory had written that, it'd be flung in his teeth every time he was interviewed. "So why shd we vote for you?"

C, your cynicism and mine are not a patch on Mr Livingstone's..!

So is he now going to ban Remembrance Day? Maybe he'll extend the Congestion Charge to wheelchairs in Whitehall. Could be a nice little earner in the November run up to Christmas.
Frankly most of the veterans that I know would run (or 'wheel') a mile from Livingstone - screaming all the way. This is the man who welcomed and consorted with the IRA etc etc.
Veterans may be elderly and/or decrepit - but they are not so bleeding stupid.

N - Stranger things have been known....
U - Somehow I cannot see Livingstone getting cheered to the echo / carried around at shoulder height should he walk into the nearest Legion Hall.

Yes of course you're right - but it certainly would be so if they had previously erected the gibbet...

Er, excuse me, but does this refer to veterans resident in London? England? The whole UK? Fares and subsistence? What about those of us living overseas? First class return air fares and 3 nights all found in The Dorchester? Details, details....
