Elected judges NOW.
A sad tale from my neck of the woods: a 97 year old man was left blind in one eye following an unprovoked assault on a Croydon tram, the event being captured on CCTV. And what did the assailant get at Croydon Crown Court for GBH? A three year supervision order.
Not happy.
Not happy.
Labels: crime and punishment, Croydon, Law and order
A truly shocking story- and onwe that is repeated all over the county almost daily alas.

Indeed Matt. I recall the story from when it happened, and this took place five minutes walk from Croydonian Towers.

A shocking story, but an equally shocking analysis.
Elected judges? Why not just cut out the middle-men (and any semblance of the Rule of Law) and give the mod pitchforks?
That's not to say that the crime committed wasn't disgusting. It truly is. But elected judges? Mort de ma vie.

Anon - The US of A manages to elect its judges without all hell breaking loose, and any judge will be constrained by the sanctions available under the law. There is no scope for passing a sentence of death by lethal injection for jay walking.
Indeed, if a judge has to represent the area he or she serves, there is no reason why he or she should not be a wet liberal if that is what that area wants. Or do you have no faith in the democratic process?

C you are forgetting that we now live in the post-democratic era. Judges will soon be appointed by Commissioner Comrade Mandelson.
