The country where the Enlightenment still means something
Man of the week is Fredrik Reinfeldt, the Swedish PM. A cartoon involving guess who has angered guess which religion's adherents (1) and Reinfeldt has had this to say:
(1). No, Ahura Mazda has not been belittled, and it is not Zoroastrians that are up in arms.
"I personally would never intentionally act in a way that could be perceived by other religions as provocative or offensive. But Swedish society [is] based on the belief that "politics should not take it upon itself to judge over freedom of the press and freedom of expression, which is an inalienable part of our country and our democracy".Compare that with the weaselling of Jack Straw last year:
"Mr Straw said the decision by some European newspapers to print the cartoons was "disrespectful" and he added that freedom of speech did not mean an "open season" on religious taboos".
(1). No, Ahura Mazda has not been belittled, and it is not Zoroastrians that are up in arms.
I wonder what would happen if we presented this to Polly... would her head explode? I means Sweden, that country of big strong Vikings, being liberal?

One does have to wonder quite what 11+ failure Mary Louisa would make of it.
