How would you feel about Blair getting a bung from the Bank of England for writing his memoirs?
Because that is what is happening in Sweden - former PM Göran Persson is getting just over £50,000 from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation: "We have a policy to support projects that shed light on Swedish history. In this case the former prime minister is contributing to making available for researchers material that is not in the national archives" [Daniel Tarschys, chairman of the foundation] said.
It does not say much about Persson's ability to knock out a page turner that his memoirs 'need' to be subsidised, does it?

Ahem, missing zero added.
Perhaps Bergman can be tempted into making a film of the book.

Blair gets bungs left right and centre I dont belive for one second that he didnt pinch some of that £14 million.
His advance from murdoch is a bung for services rendered , a standard one for all politicians.

Although C as I was reading in Mathew Paris`s collumn the other day its rather frustrating ,to a free marketeer like you, that Sweden seems to continue to be welathy healthy and happy .

N - The Swedes never went in for nationalisation UK style, so they had an essentially market economy all along, but with an awful lot of welfarism thrown in. I would argue that Sweden has been a comparatively successful society despite rather than because of that.

Probably on a par with charitable status being given to the Margaret Thatcher Archive.
