Al Sharpton - the Strom Thurmond connection
Odd story of the day:
"According to the [New York Daily Times], the genealogists found documents establishing that [Al] Sharpton's great-grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, was a slave owned by Julia Thurmond, whose grandfather was Strom Thurmond's great-great-grandfather".

No doubt the Rev is already considering suing for reparations

My comment would be, "So what?"
All the black people whose families have been in the United States for almost as long as whites have ancestors who were slaves. And most of the old families in the South owned slaves. So I just don't see that this is some great coincidence.

True, it was just that particular piece of linkage.

Well, yes. That's a point.
Speaking of the South and slaves, some people may not know that in Louisiana, which was at that time heavily French (still is actually) some, or many, of the slave-owners sired children by their slaves.
And acknowledged the children and not only provided for their education, but actually sent them to universities in France. And acknowledged them in their wills.
The result is you have a very rich class of black people in Louisiana. Like the rich everywhere, they have conserved their money over the generations, they own beautiful properties in exclusive areas, they have their own traditions, etc.
Certainly, there are Anglo slave owners who acknowledged their offspring, but it was not the norm.
Just an interesting little fact. And these Louisiana well-educated, rich, achieving, exclusive black people are as far away from the blacks interviewed on the Beeb after Katrina as are the Vanderbilts and Gores from white trailer trash elsewhere.
