Three per cent of Americans think the US's influence on the world is unimportant....

The Herald Tribune has an entertaining survey on international attitudes on how influential or otherwise various countries are, plus sundry other issues of the day. I think the US figure quoted in the headline is my favourite, but there are plenty of other entertaining findings. The Spanish have a lowish opionion of their influence, with 14% thinking it very unimportant, a significantly higher figure than the estimation that we, the Germans, the French, the Italians and the Americans have of it. The French might be peeved that the British and the Americans are least likely to think it very important, and most likely to think it very unimportant. 66% of the denizens of Perfidious Albion questioned reckoned France important, with the reverse finding 79%. Ho ho.

Elsewhere, terrorism is keeping the British and the Americans awake at night, with religious fanaticism (those pesky Methodists...) vexing the Germans, Italians and Spanish. The French opt for global warming.

Yeah, I must admit that I lie awake at night worrying about the militant arm of the Little Sisters of Mercy.

On the other hand , the Sisters of Mercy sound marvellous according to their site

.... an industrial groove machine.
And intellectual love gods in our spare time.

...can`t be bad

I was quite a fan way back, but their stuff has not aged well.

According to Lenny Cohen,
The sisters of mercy are not departed or gone.

Hope that helps.

Indeed, and 'they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem'.

I'm rather fond of our Canadian friends too, even if 'Canada: the friendly giant to the North' once won a competition for the headline least likely to prompt one to read a story.

Can you remember the headline? Or was it easy to forget?
