Bloggers' night on 18 Doughty Street last night

At PragueT's suggestion, I am making this a stand alone topic and splitting it off from the Kelly thread. However, before we drop Kelly for the day, let it be noted that she has just announced new powers to tackle anti-social behaviour. I wonder how far her imagination was wandering when drawing up the press release.

The show is now available as video on demand and is worth watching - go to 18DS and click on 'Doughty on Demand' (My blog appears in the opening credits, which is nice, if not on topic at the moment). While I am far from in agreement with Recess Monkey, he does deserve credit for managing to dominate the discussion, and he must have had at least half of the programme's airtime, including Iain. It is unfortunate that the tech chaps at 18DS could not get the show out in real time (my sympathies Mike), as I think it would have gained texture from input from the viewers. I was frustrated that I could not plague Iain with instant messages, and I believe Dizzy and PragueT feel the same.

As to the issue of bullying, flaming and so forth, I have not witnessed very much on the UK political blogs, as by and large bloggers of a feather etc etc. I do not spend much time on left leaning sites, as there seems little point in howling in the wilderness, and I suspect most of my ideological soulmates feel much the same, as do those on the Left. That the UK left is utterly demoralised at the moment must also be a factor, so I imagine they huddle together for warmth and engage in blamestorming in order to keep their spirits up.

I was suprised how precious Iain was about the thing . Recess Monkey got away with murder and there is no use being polite if one person is going to take all the time .

Why is Rachel from North London there. She has no political input and is tedious beyond belief . I have already posted on you other thread my further thoughts but ...

The expected assault of political correctness is well under way

I agree that most debate on political blogs do not represent bullying - although I'd suggest that the Left is far more guilty than the Right if that were a discussion topic. Turning to Recess.

Recess enjoys attacking Tories, but his line that Mark and Rehman deserve worse abuse because of their "varying degrees of ethnicity" was despicable. In both cases, the attacks are not merely mean-spirited and unwarranted - they break the law. He mentioned my "barbed comments" as if he was a victim himself. As he is a bully I am happy to spend time on his site and others showing him for what he is. It is his behaviour that has drawn others into it. If anyone wants to make any comparisons to the Piper affair, feel free - because that has many parallels.

rachel of NMorth London is clearly refusing to post up some cruiticism of her and Doughty Street.Thats pathetic isn1t it , you reply not censor.

I wonder if flaming , will come to mean anyhting I don`t either like or agree with.

Most likely

Blogger Praguetory said... 12:05 pm

Some people deserve flaming. I have to confess I do spend time on Leftie sites and it ain't pretty for them.

Blogger Croydonian said... 12:33 pm

PT - I see what you mean.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:36 pm

12.33 also!

In what way are the left demoralised? The Garjan was much as usual this morning (apart from an article defending "intelligent design" thesis rather well.)

The monkey could dominate as he had the best seat , james cleverley was stuck at an odd angle, the woman was right next to dale , and that other pair were practicaly off screen.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:40 pm

I may just go and abuse the monkey, I thought he was Jewish , its worse, hes a paki !!! )+:

His claim to be of African-Asian origin is good fun. There's quotas to meet don't you know?

Blogger Croydonian said... 12:52 pm

Baffled of Sutton - well, things are not quite going to plan for them at the moment, are they?

I can't say I'm hugely impressed by bloggers who refuse to publish non-abusive criticism addressed to them personally, so nul points for RNL.

Agreed, the seating plan was not hugely helpful, but the cameras do move....

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:55 pm

Some people deserve flaming.

Their arguments are practically 100 Octane, they catch fire without any effort.

Seriously, I worry about or future, if that is the best argument that our brigth young thins can come up with.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 12:58 pm

Things are going VERY well for the left. Violent crime flourishes, immigration is out of control, left-wing lawyers are almost universally accepted as bona fide human rights lawyers, the family is no longer even defended, we're beaten in the Middle East....

Que voulez vous de plus (as Pet Clark used to sing)?

Blogger Praguetory said... 1:05 pm

Lol to your comments Serf. I hadn't noticed he was their "political education officer". It's the kids I feel sorry for.

Blogger Croydonian said... 1:19 pm

Peut etre vous avez raison, mon brave de Sutton.

A political education officer? Does sound a touch Cambodia Year Zero, does it not?

Anonymous Anonymous said... 2:11 pm

How was the sound system? I stopped watching 18 DS just before Christmas because the sound only picked up two people full time and the others on the couch only intermittently.

Harry's Place is OK as a leftie hellhole, but what is the point, given that we know what their views on any given subject are going to be, and given that we don't agree?

PT says "the attacks are not merely mean-spirited and unwarranted - they break the law." So what? I think it is our duty to break bossy laws that are designed as a means of controlling what the population can think or say. If I don't like a group of people, I am going to say I don't like them whether Daddy Tony claims that is very, very naughty or not. (I hate Tony Blair and spend a lot of time wishing him very ill fortune.)

Blogger Praguetory said... 2:55 pm

As an analogy, Verity, how would you like it if someone taped a conversation with you and then made that tape available to others without your knowledge or permission? That's where things go too far. These are all laws that occurred under this government so I have no problem using them when it suits this right-winger who wants to see a bonfire of laws when we return to power.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 3:02 pm

PT - Obviously, I wouldn't like that. But as I didn't watch the programme, I don't really know what we're talking about.

Does anyone have any theories about why Iain has the dreadful Rachel North on? She contributes nothing. She's a smug, insular, raving pinko. I cannot think what Iain thinks she adds to the debate, other than to be a focal point for revulsion.

Blogger Praguetory said... 3:11 pm

She's been bullied.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 3:14 pm

he has to have 'balance' in the show and quite likes Rachel I guess. I don't find her too bad myself. IMagine if he had Alex Hilton as the token leftie all the time, 18 DS would be unwatchable.

Blogger Croydonian said... 3:25 pm

I don't find the sound too bad in general. Guests are given wireless microphone packs, and if the mic is properly positioned all should be fine.

As 18DS lefties go, Kerron Cross is quite good. He avoids ranting and hectoring.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 3:39 pm

Just catching up with this late in the day, I tried to tune into Doughty Street last night, but there was a technical hitch and I gave up after 20 mins. Maybe I should have kept trying, it looks like I missed a good evening.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 3:40 pm

P.S. What was wrong with Rachel?
