And bloggers are accused of not checking their facts

Jackie Ashley of the Guardian clearly believes in rigorous fact checking and advancing her
'argument' only after a careful examination of all the facts at hand, witness this:

"If Guardian sites are any guide, bloggers tend to be disproportionately young, male, angry and rightwing".

Erm, Jackie, bloggers are the people who write the piece that is commented on. If so, I am delighted that CiF is casting its net so much wider than the usual pool of bien pensant 'liberals'. Forgiving her that lapse, I can think of plenty of bloggers who are young (under 30), plenty who are male, precious few who are angry and plenty who are right wing. But all four?

I think the key is to understand from an Gaurdianista point of view what constitues each group. This is probably at some variance to reality.

For example 'right-wing', I would enjoy very much to know this defintion from her perspective; anyone who disagreed with her about anything would be my guess.

I am old amused rightwing and male . I can`t think of many really angry people except Verity sometimes . She falls down on the male side although she , may , for all I know , be young. Quite right wiong , but not excessively so in my view . It depends where you start from

I can do you three out of four, but would gladly swap two of them for the missing one.

mania you are not "rightwing"
you a wishy washy liberal, hence your support of the "C word"
(I dont mean Croydon)

CU - Exactly....

N - DK and Eugenides get a bit cross, but I'm not sure about youth.

Tom - as my father was so very fonf of putting it, 'youth is wasrted on the young'.

PH - all a question of definition, eh?

3 out of 4 aint bad.

If only we could get rid of Labour and their Guardian cheerleaders, we'd stop being angry.

Blogger Praguetory said... 2:39 pm

Bloggers make mistakes. For example, former Labour PPC Mike Ion must be hearing dog-whistles because he replaced young with white and middle class. Mike was one of those urging bloggers to remove links to Guido a while back.

Either way, I'm claiming all the monikers (32 is relatively young isn't it?)

Good spot. I would like to know what it is that one can put in a blog psot that immediately marks one out as being young. It isn't as though people sign off as E.J Thribb, 15 1/4 or whatever.

Blogger Praguetory said... 3:03 pm

Also, what marks people out as being angry. I may be highly critical of many aspects of the ruling shower, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm angry. Isn't calling people angry what you do when they are on the other side of the argument to you? I'm taking her young line to mean can operate a PC (although there are some bloggers me included where that is debatable), her male comment is taken as it was intended - as an insult, rightwing to mean not conforming to the cosy broadsheet consensus (but if you did why bother with a blog) and angry to mean that we are generally in disagreement with her. Erm, sorry to go on. For the record, my heart is beating at a resting pulse rate.

Blogger Croydonian said... 3:12 pm

Indeed, I would argue that one is unlikely to be able to blog coherently if angry - a well-framed post is all about control and nuance.

Newmania - I am not even angry that The Croydonian comes in in Spanish, although I would style myself vaguely annoyed.

I'm not angry with NuLabour. Contemptuous would be more accurate. I'm not even angry with Tony Blair as there is actually nothing there to be angry about. I hate him, but that is not the same as anger.

Mrs. Andrew Marr does not, as someone pointed out above, seem to understand that bloggers are people who have blogs. Those of us who frequent blogs and contribute thoughts to blogs are commenters. Duh.

City Unslicker, Yes. I think you're right. If you disagree with Jackie and Andrew, you're 'right wing'.

Now, where it invites me to choose an identity, I will check Otros and sign in as Verity under Nombre de Usuario.

O/T and please forgive, but does anyone know if there is a UTube or any other video of Tony Blair's interview with John Sopel? I have just read the second columnist (Quentin Letts) who has said that Tony Blair was either drunk out of his mind or has descended into raving insanity. Schadenfreude beckons and I am trying to find out if there's any way to watch it. Is John Sopel with the Beeb?

Blogger Croydonian said... 5:31 pm

Verity, here it is.

Anonymous Anonymous said... 5:48 pm

Wahhh!!!! It doesn't work! I can't get it to start! I want to watch Tony Blair losing it! I want to gloat! I want to have a good time! Is that too much to ask?

It isn't, is it?
