They do things differently on the other side of the Pond

There's an aircraft carrier under construction called the USS George H.W Bush, adding to the existing submarine USS Jimmy Carter. Although there are rather more flat tops named for Republicans than Democrats, I don't think that Carter was being snubbed, rather there was the pleasing symmetry of naming a submarine after the only (?) submariner president.

I appreciate that Americans /tend/ to be non-partisan in honouring their presidents, but I cannot imagine the Royal Navy naming a ship for A - a politician, B - a living person. Although fairness requires me to note that the Churchill tank was rolled out during the great man's premiership.

Having gone for a mooch around the usual place to see what Royal Navy vessels are callled, HMS Quorn appears to be named for the hunt rather than the trademarked 'protein rich foodstuff made from processed fungus'.

The aircraft carrier is appropriate to Pres Herbert Walker Bush because he was a pilot - and a brave one - in WWII.

I for one would love to see Jimmuh Cahduh snubbed. Probably only rabid, red in tooth and claw Carter haters remember that he lied about being top of his class at college. Then a reporter found out he was 50th or something. He's a nasty, smug piece of work, and Rosalyn! Don't get me started on Rosalyn!

Ah, yes. I'd forgotten he was a naval aviator.

As to Herberts "heroism" many of his fellow pilots at that time disagreed ,the consensus was that he chuted out leaving his crew to fry.
And getting picked up by a handy submarine??
