Random finds for this morning

Ed West in the Telegraph unveiled this rather unnerving statistic.

"We would all be a bit surprised were Fifa suddenly to award Lebanon the next football World Cup, yet the 2010 tournament will be in South Africa, where more people have been murdered since July 12 than have died in the Levant (this is based on the latest available figure of 54 murders a day, almost twice what Hizbollah and Israel combined have managed)".

That great temple of principle, the Quai d'Orsay, has claimed that Iran "plays a stabilizing role in the region". Fond though I am of the French, their foreign policy can be just bewildering at times. The Jerusalem Post reckons "should be seen in the wider context of a French-US tug-of-war regarding whether Iran or Syria is the ultimate bad guy in the region". And just how much clout do the French have there? About as much as us, which resumably equates to about zero.

Meandering a tad, we will all remember Iran's dubbing of the US as 'The Great Satan', and perhaps the lesser known characterising of Israel as 'the Little Satan'. The French however, rated as being 'the Adolescent Satan', which set me to imagining it staying in its bedroom, hanging around on MySpace and generally upsetting its parents.
