What the French are up to, part 536

As some (all?) of you may know, our old friend Jacques Delors has a daughter, Martine Aubry, who is the mayor of Lille. Frankly I think they deserve each other.

Anyway, Liberation reports a poll that shows that the burghers of Lille like her record, but don't like her. Meanwhile, she is yet another presidential wannabe.

I've just spotted this fairly incendiary (by French standards) piece of commentary in a Le Figaro item on Segolene Royal and possible moves by the French Left towards Blairism: "

"Our country has became a giant kindergarten populated by increasingly infantilised citizens, who are utterly convinced that the State can do everything and are happy to entrust an ever larger part of their responsibilities and liberties to the divine Providence of the State" .

Sounds a bit like the UK, actually.

On the basis that a good doctor has to study disease, I've been sniffing around on Humanite.fr (maybe it is childish of me to find the use of a .fr domain rather than a .com etc amusing, but I do) the organ of the French communist party, and they seem to have a new friend, or perhaps I could say almost a fellow traveller in Oskar Lafontaine, judging by this interview:

"And you also evoke Marx"

Oskar Lafontaine.

"Yes, because it presented the dynamics of the development of capitalism admirably. This is why we now know that the wars in the Middle East are a consequence of capitalism's appetite for expansion. …This is why we do not use the misleading word ‘globalization’. We should call a spade a spade and call it capitalism".
