Meanwhile, if Wikipedia is to be believed, the design for the Tower was offered to Barcelona first.

Does that explain why when the Enterprise goes to Paris in the 24th century the Eiffel Tower is shiny? Perhaps it will be rebuilt in a more eye-catching metal.
