The worst place on earth to be a woman

Is Yemen, followed by Saudi Arabia, Chad, Pakistan and Nepal, according to a report by the World Economic Forum.

Conversely, Sweden leads, followed by three other Nordic countries and Germany. The UK is ninth.

The report creates a gender gap figure based on four variables - economic participation / opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment and health & survival.

And why should this be of interest to men, other than the fact that we have mothers, wives/girlfriends, sisters, daughters and nieces?

Well, the WEF figures show a very strong correlation between a small gender gap and global competitiveness and GDP per head.

Nepal? Who knew?

It was a bit of a surprise to me too. I think as lot of its marking down come from it being a very under developed economy.

And it's Hindu, not islamic. I don't believe it. They just didn't want them all to be islamic,I'm bet. I'm sure Nepal gets a gang of aid from India, and agricultural and so on advisors. I just don't believe it. It's not in India's interest to have a very backward, poor country on its border, especially one with which it shares a religion.

I don't buy it. More backward than Sikkim? More backward than Myanmar? Wha'?

but did they benchmark these against a dinner date with your boss, John Prescott?

surely that is the standard to stress test the data....

Whose boss, John Prescott? Are you on the right thread? Are you drunk?

Get Germaine Greer on the case, she'll sort those Arabs out. She works in education, she's political, she's strong - emotionally, physically, intellectually - she's a total whiz in fact.

Blogger Darkersideofbridgetjones said... 7:34 am

She'll have to give up the fags though, I don't think they'd appreciate that.

And the booze as well. But I could definitely see her doing it. I like her, because she has got conviction. How old is she now? Probably about sixty?

Aye.

Och aye.

Darker Side of Bridget Jones - Sort out what Arabs? They don't have Arabs in the Himalayas. Nepal is a Hindu kingdom.

I mean, are they saying that women in Nepal have lower status than women in Somalia? Lower than Bangladesh? They just wanted to throw a Hindu state in so they wouldn't look prejudiced. Anything to suit the islamics.

BTW, they never invented anything. Ever. It's a myth. They did study astronomy a bit, given there's not a lot to do in the desert at night over the course of several thousand years. That's how they got hooked on the moon and got the idea that it is a god.

Verity - I think DSBJ (who is, incidentally, my other half) was referring more generally to the lower ranking countries.

Having checked, Somalia does not feature in the list at all, and neither Iraq nor Afghanistan. I suppose they excluded non-functioning states.

Croydonian, I don't know what DSBJ was referring to, but she wrote that Germaine Greer would "sort out those Arabs" and I still want to know what Arabs? Saudi Arabia and Yemen are the only two Arab states referred to and I don't think that even Germaine Greer would take on Saudi Arabia, much less have the ability to "sort them out".

Also, I continue to maintain that Nepal isn't one of the bottom-ranking countries in the world for the status of women. This is one more moonbat Swedish idea.

Speaking of Hindus, I'd just like to say how wonderful it is that little Lakshmi has survived her 27-hour surgery, thanks to the skill of 36 Indian surgeons who donated their time and learning. And a Lovely Diwali to any Hindus who happen to be reading this!
