Erm, deterring what, exactly?
This beauty is the USS Nimitz.
Not enormously newsworthy in itself, but sundry Indian lefties and the like are all a-flutter over the possibility that it might be carrying nuclear weapons when it moors off Chennai, better known as Madras . Given that it is nuclear powered, such concern seems a little silly, and the left parties might wish to occupy themselves with the Teeth of Shiva.
Over at the Nimitz's home page, its mission is defined thus: "USS Nimitz provides a global reach to deter aggression by would-be foes; preserve freedom of the seas; promote peace and stability; and when called upon, to deliver precise and persistent combat power directly to our enemies". However, an Indian MoD bod said it "is not known to be carrying weapons with nuclear warheads".
IF NOT, WHY NOT?

I didn't realise that Indian politics was still polluted with such socialist nonsense!
Still I bet they wouldn't let a former CND activist become PM like our stupid electorate did.

Our Indian friends are better off than they used to be, but a nationwide blast of disinfectant to clear out remaining Nehru offspring and the like would not go amiss.

I think the US missiles can reach anywhere in the world from Idaho without the need for sea transport. Similarly the nuclear armed medium range tomahawk missles will be in the nuclear submarines that won't be docking in Chennai.
I do believe this is the part of India where the state government is still run by the communist party?

When something the size of small city, and containing enough airpower to match half of what you have as a entire nation, arrives on your doorstep it is understandable you may be worried.
TBH it matters squat all if Nimitz has nukes or not, combined with the rest of its little circus (Carrier Strike Group 11) it could probably obliterate most of India's navy without them, particularly when you consider USS Nimitz's little companion USS Princeton and her 120+ Tomahawk missiles.

Ian - point taken. I would not expect India and Uncle Sam to fall out any time soon, it was more a case of if the Pentagon went to Defcon 1 with another country then the Nimitz should have a full range of weaponry.
