Some things to celebrate for May Day
Despite the occasional huffing and puffing about May Day à l'anglais being rooted in things other than socialism, I regard said H&P as being eyewash.
Anyway, care of the usual place, here are some other things that one might wish to note for today:
1707 - The Act of Union
1834 - The abolition of slavery in our colonies
1945 - The suicide of Goebbels.
On the downside, it also marks the foundation of the 'Democratic People's Republic' of Korea.

1751 - first cricket match played in America
1946 - Joanna Lumley is born
1961 - Fidel Castro abolishes elections
1994 - Death of Ayrton Senna

The first two of those are good.
One of Joanna Lumley's children was the contemporary of a friend at St Pauls, and her annual appearance for speech day or whatever was eagerly anticipated....

The hordes of the great unwashed who used to gather on May Day for anti capitalism marches seem to have gone quiet for the last few years. So that's another good thing about the day.
