The Woolmer business

"A team of Scotland Yard officers will travel to Jamaica to review the investigation into the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer, police said today.

Three detectives and a scenes of crime officer will arrive in the Caribbean country next week, following a formal request from the Jamaican authorities, said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police".

Are our Jamaican friends paying for this, and if not why not? Yes, I would like to see the culprits(s) brought to justice, but it is not as though our plod are exactly short of work, and the absence of four officers from Scotland Yard means that either crime investigations will be delayed or other officers will be doing a lot of overtime.

That's a very good point,Croydonian.

The number of murders in Jamaica, 1500 and rising for just 3 million Yardies, suggests the Jmc Sweeney are rather overwhelmed. Whether it's up to us to sort out the murder of a pale-face, I don't know.

It also sujjests (!) that the eironogenic (peace-promoting) qualities of the ganja weed are rather over-rated.

Oh dear, not another delay for Mr. Yates!

Anonymous 12:40 a.m. You write that the Bahamas are "very homophobic".

They are scared of the same?

The same what? I want to know what is the same thing these homophobic islanders are afraid of!

Twins? Two peas in a pod? Sardines? Clones? A dozen eggs? What? What?

Errrr, I am assuming that you know that while the Latin for mankind is homo, the word homo in Greek (as it is coupled with the Greek 'phobos') just means 'the same'. Homosexual just means 'same sex'.

But even if it was Latin you were coupling with Greek, it would still be wrong. Homo means 'mankind' - not 'gay men'.

I get really bored with special pleading groups trying to smelt ancient meanings to suit themselves, especially as it is inevitably done with great ignorance.

Also, while we're at it, 'phobia' isn't dislike of. It is fear of. An ailurophobe, for example, isn't someone who doesn't like cats. It is someone who has an irrational fear of cats.

I don't know anyone who has an irrational fear of the same, or even an irrational fear of homosexuals.
