I was unaware that other countries doled out collective awards along the lines of our granting of the George Cross to Malta, but apparently the French do too. So far, so not very interesting.
However, of the four places outside France awarded the Legion d'Honneur, one is Belgrade which gained the award in 1920. Fast forward 79 years to the NATO bombing of Serbia, "The United States was, inevitably, the dominant member of the coalition against Serbia, although all of the NATO members were involved to some degree". France therefore attacked one of its own medal holders. Curious, eh? Other winners are Liege, Stalingrad (in 1984 - quick off the mark, were they not?) and Luxembourg in 1957, even though France also accused Luxembourg the country, if not the city, of collaboration during WW1.
No discussion of decorations is complete without mention of the Order of Mother Heroine of the Soviet Union, for which one had to have 10 children. Crikey.

sexist too the Russian's then.
I am sure we here in these days can have many 'Heroes of the Blairland' who have fathered 10 children; many even being unaware of it no doubt.
On another note, the British honoured President Kruger after the first Boer war, only to depose him in the second.

N - Maybe Dick Dastardly has taken him to the vet.
CU - True, although I feel that the maternal efforts were somewhat more trying than the paternal ones.
