How long is a piece of string?

The classic answer is any length you like, but I pose the question because of this staggering piece of nonsense from an assistant commissioner at the Met, who "wants an independent judicial inquiry into radicalisation of young Muslims after the 7 July bombs".

One might note that a judicial inquiry investigates where there are facts to be found rather than deciding that there is a fact and then seeking evidence to prove it. The suggestion of a judicial inquiry here is akin to tasking a highly paid QC to pick up mercury with a fork.

How about a study of the radicalisation of young indigenous men who are sick to death of the radicalisation of aggressive young Muslims who would be happier living under shariah law?

I do think the idea of living under shariah law, for Muslims, is an excellent one, though, and they should pursue it by moving elsewhere. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Somalia, Libya, Tunisia, Lebanon (I hear there's lots of action there!),Morocco, Egypt, Bangladesh,Syria ... the list of Islamic hellholes is endless. Jack Straw and Margaret Beckett should also consider this option.

Or how about an independent judicial enquiry into corruption among Pakistani members of the police force, including commissioners who have been promoted way, way beyond their intellectual capabilities and moral compasses?

I think there's also a problem with senior police officers playing politics. If the Tories ever get in again God knows how they'll unravel that.

DP - agreed. My instant solution is elected police chiefs.

Agreed, Croydonian. It works. Their continuing in work is 100% dependent on whether they perform up to the electorate's expectations.

Although, oddly enough, NYC, where the police chief is appointed by the mayor, rather than being elected, is leading the decline in crime in the entire United States. Here is a long and fascinating piece in City Journal, describing the methods NYC PD uses. I cannot imagine Britain doing anything this intelligent and energetic.
http://city-journal.org/html/16_3_ny_cops.html It's a long piece, but I guarantee, once you start reading it, you will not abandon it until you've read the last word.
