A brief observation on Brown's speech

"A man who has never been within the tropics does not know what a thunderstorm means; a man who has never looked on Niagara has but a faint idea of a cataract; and he who has not [listened to a Brown speech] may be said not to know what it is to lie".

With acknowledgments to Thomas Macauley.

If this is Gordon fighting for his life then......... well I don't know what.

Weak, weak, weak.

As I noted chez Dizz, my stomach couldn't hold out for the full speech, but the emoting was so fake and there was so little meat to what he actually had to say.

All the rheorical skill of the lovechild of a speak your weight machine and a whooppee cushion.

rhetorical, that should be.

I was reminded of all those folk happily clapping along in the front rows at the beginning of Ceacesceu's last speech, not realising there was row upon row of people behind them who were about to start whistling a booing

It's more Nero than Ceausescu!

Or the naked emperor of Hans-Christian Andersen fame?

"Thomas Macauley"

Not related (however distantly) to Sarah Macaulay-Brown by any chance?

After her 'performance' in Manchester, perhaps not then.

Anyway, what was all that nauseous Presidential Candidate bollox? Is Cameron going to get his Mrs to 'introduce' him to the conference? Does the Labour Party now elect husband and wife teams? For that matter, in the light of the non-election of Brown, did the Labour Party also non-elect Mrs Brown?

Maybe it was felt that no one knew who Brown actually was. He certainly didn't clarify that aspect in the course of his hour's dissertation - nor anything else, either.

U - Not that I am aware, but the symmetry would be rather neat if so.

Gordon getting down to show us what a man of the people he is reminded me of my very dim memories of Coriolanus.

.....wavy lines.....

I imagine GB's thoughts pre, mid and post speech were a somewhat less eloquent version of this:

"Most sweet voices!—
Better it is to die, better to starve,
Than crave the hire which first we do deserve.
Why in this wolvish toge should I stand here,
To beg of Hob and Dick that do appear,
Their needless vouches?
