Ageism, sexism, sectarianism and racism in voting in the Land of the Free
Interesting item in the LA Times on prospective presidential candidates in 2008.
The really good news is that Hillary Clinton would get flattened by McCain - 36% to 50%, and even the gleeming toothed Mormon Mitt Romney would only be bettered by 42% to 36% by Clinton. Rudi and Condi were not tracked as candidates, but both were viewed favourably by Republicans at 80%+, way more than the 65% for McCain.
And now to the headline: 4% would not vote for a woman and 3% would not vote for an African American. However, some prejudices are clearly more palatable - 14% would not vote for a 72 year old (as McCain will be in '08) and 14% would not vote for a Mormon.

That seems enitely reaosanable to me a Mormon is bonkers and somone that old may be not up to the physical demands. Prejudice is only informed assumtion without whgich we can hardly function.

Clearly the Democrats will select a female, black Mormon ancient.

And I wouldn't vote for a muslim. So what? It's their vote. They can use it as they like.

So Croydonian can add "Religionism" to his headline.

fascinating as it presents the classic political dilemma.popularity within the party is not the same as poularity in the country.personally, the results for hilary do not surprise me.I can't abide the woman and whilst I hate george Bush, the republicans have a grewater number of stronger candidates
will be a fascinating contest. My money is on mCcain.the GOP need someone who can win floating voters over.

But Rigger - Hillary is not popular within the party, either. I don't know how she has managed to cling on for so long as no one seems to like her except the hard line nazi feminist tendency.
If Rudi stands, he will walk away with it. Condoleezza Rice will not stand. She is not a politician. She has no experience as a politician. She's never run for so much as a seat on a local school board. She is not a glad-hander. She's private and aloof.
Am I alone in being rather pleased that the percentage of people who wouldn't vote for a black American is so tiny?
I wonder what percentage wouldn't vote for a muslim. Tee hee.

Rather annoyingly, I cannot pinpoint Verity's post when she wrote something along these lines: 'I don't care what colour, religion or gender a candidate is as long as they agree with me'. A sentiment I subscribe to.

VERITY SAID -Am I alone in being rather pleased that the percentage of people who wouldn't vote for a black American is so tiny?
Not entirely , it does look encouraging and I wonder what the equivalent figure woud be here. Hushed and buried and deemed to senitive for the ignorant taxpayers to know I suspect.
nazi feminist tendency ...? Is there such a thing then . Sounds chilling , I can`t really think of a UK equivalent in serious politics .
I remember that post C !!!

Newmania - Off the top of my head, Germaine Greer and the sisterhood. That baroness something who has now approved IVF for single mothers and lesbians. Creating a child who will never have a father is wicked - and this in the face of the roaming gangs of lawless teenage boys who terrorise neighbourhoods because they have never had a father to keep them in line.
This is the kind of femina-nazis I refer to. Everything has to be sacrificed for "women's rights".

Interesting Verity- My impression was that the US had such issues more at the centre of political life . Abortion for example?
Germaine Greer really is an example of someone who wrote one good book ( and it is a good read) and has been a pest ever since. Her criticism of films and so on is fatuous and ..well anyway she is only a talking head.. Yes like your attitude to the fatherless family and on the social consequences of that. Abso -bleeding –lutely!!
I think its very good of you to speak out against extreme feminism .Many women , I suspect , would privately agree but do not say so . I would not want to confuse any of this with stupid misogyny though and allowing women access to opportunity . We do not want to be like …certain unenlightened religions I could mention…of course.

I think there's an international sisterhood of femina-fascists. The Americans were in the forefront, but the Americans in general are less easily bullied than the British. And they will be lampooned on some comedy shows (although supported on others). Yes, there are many people who do not share the femina-fascist view that every woman has a "right" to abortion on demand and the foetus has no rights whatsoever. In the US, they have demonstrations (branded "right wing loonies", of course, by the MSM)against abortion on demand, which I regard as repellent and dehumanising. In Britain, they wouldn't dare stand up for what they believe is right.
I don't know any woman, Newmania, who supports extreme feminism - except the extreme feministas themselves, of course, and they are very noisy indeed. I don't know any woman who thinks the idea of bringing children into the world who will never know a father is a good one.
As always, it is the noisy, aggressive, destructive left who want to force these abnormalities on the rest of us. And they do it one inch at a time. Over decades. They are the ones who have created these gangs of feral youths who have had no male influence at all in their lives - meaning they had neither discipline nor a role model to live up to. They have no idea how to be men.

In the UK fatherless families are very much connected with subsidised housing policy and benefits policy .I think these misguided social distorters have had more to do with destroying what was the solid unit of working class life ,the traditional family .
The sort of attitudes you describe have been virtually economically forced on the "white" working class who are/were very resistant by middleclass politicians who are influenced by the sort of ideas you mention.
Well Verity I do not wish to monopolise you , but I must say I particularly enjoyed from "feral youths" on.You are using precisley the language Mrs.N uses . Frequently .
Quite .

Thank God I had a wonderful father. As bad as a fatherless "family" is for boys, it is equally bad for girls in a different way. Every child needs a male and a female adult as part of the structure of its existence. These little girls know nothing but a caravanserai of men passing through the wilderness of their mothers' lives and who are not interested her children by previous lodgers and play no role in a family setting. You are correct to note that these destructive housing and benefits policies were imposed by the "advanced thinkers" of the time despite resistance by the working classes themselves, who had always maintained a level of sanity and decency in their lives.

A "real" woman doesnt have to be told by dykes that she is equal, she know how to control a man and get what she wants.

Mr Hitchens is to be commended for his sanity.
As for 2008, Hilary is unelectable outside the East and West coasts. Obama is an ultra light weight (whatever people say about his attributes). A kind of Afro-American Sego. But the Dems could easily fashion a very appealing election narrative around him. Or what about a Hilary for President candidate with Obama taking the Vice Presidential slot. How would the Republicans go up against such a powerful ticket? The other Dem hopefuls are frankly non-entities.
Rudi would be unacceptable to much of the Repuplican base. While remaining highly unpopular with just about everyone else. McCain while patently a man of virtue is a bit on the elderly side and overly prone to irritating republicans... If I were a Republican leader, I would be thinking about Rudi for president with a foreign policy wise, female, southern conservative as VP. That would win it for them.
In other words, this is the first US presidential race since the 1920s when there is no obvious, favourite contender from either party.

'The Female Eunuch' is a very interesting read, and to my surprise is often highly humourous. Greer is a good deal less, erm, edgy than the likes of Friedan, Steinem and Andrea 'does anyone actually believe a word you say?' Dworkin.
Sounds like a fine GOP ticket IT.

Stamboul Tory - I don't agree that the Dems could fashion a workable narrative around Hillary and Obama. Hillary does at least have experience in government and she has apparently been an able senator for the last three or four years.
Obama is nowhere, and deservedly so. Frankly, I think he sounds like a jerk whatever colour he is. He has absolutely no experience in government and he's entertaining thoughts of running for the presidency? This is one of those things journalists and ordinary people kick around to entertain themselves, but no one in the Dem hierarchy is going to seriously propose Obama for even the VPship when there are so many able, experienced Dems out there. No chance.
I read his life story somewhere, but it was so unbelievably convoluted ... I can't remember where he was born. Was it Hawaii? Was Hawaii a state at the time? The US president has to have been born in the United States.
Anyway, I don't like him. He sounds like a self-regarding jerk.

Stamboul Tory - I do agree that the Reps need to bring in a southerner for VP. How about Jeb Bush? Ha ha ha ha ha.
The governor of Mississippi might be good. The way he handled Katrina was exemplary. People don't realise, but the mess in New Orleans was caused just by the fringe of Katrina. New Orleans did not get close to the full impact. The hurricane actually hit the coast of Mississippi, not Louisiana. The governor had prepared by asking the President for federal help AHEAD OF TIME. He also invited bureaucrats from the federal loan assistance scheme that covers disasters, down AHEAD OF TIME, so they could begin processing applications the minute the storm had died out. The troops were on the streets the next morning, clear up the damage, and the people who had packed up and taken themselves out of danger's way (because they don't live on welfare and expect the state to do everything for them)came back and joined in the cleaning up. That governor did a wonderful, responsible, well-planned job for the people of Mississippi. And his calm and intelligent performance brought him to national attention.
