More on the veil

At the risk of infringing on IstanbulTory's jurisdiction, a 92 year old archaeologist is the latest person about to go up before a Turkish beak on a charge with profound civil liberties implications . (source)

Ms Cig theorised in a book that "Islamic-style head scarves date back more than 5,000 years - several millennia before the birth of Islam - and were worn by priestesses who initiated young men to sex". Apparently this counts as 'inciting religious hatred', or sufficiently so for her to be put on trial. It also counts as being highly amusing, and makes Turkish law look utterly ridiculous.

I have no idea whether Muazzez Ilmiye Cig is a Miss, a Ms or a Mrs, but it would be wrong not to ponder on the application of Agatha Christie's crack that the best husband a woman can have is an archaeologist, as the older one gets, the more interested he becomes.

I am sure she is a Ms, being a feminist. She is a very interesting person, an expert on Sumerians, who basically claims that the Sumerians did everything first. She is probably right, but it can get a little amusing.

I am sure the court case will fail, but it just goes to show how stupid our government is, that they wanted a similar law on our statute books.

As it is quite common to hear Turks make completely outrageous comments about non muslim religions, I am sure this law is not applied very often or very evenly.

The lady in question is being prosecuted as a result of a complaint filed by a lawyer from Izmir. This case was not brought by the public prosecutor.Theoretically, she could face up to three years in jail on incitement of religious hatred. But in all likliehood the Court will throw out the complaint at its first sitting.

The courts there must waste more time and money on throwing out ridiculous cases than any other country. Turkey is also due to hear next week that its appalling record on human rights is likely to delay to delay its entry into the EU.

What example does it give to the secularist Turks when, in this country, we accord equal access to the media to the lunacy of Islam. Still worse when we appear to accept, in a dim witted Lib way, the moral equivalency of all cultures and just about any one else.

It is a rather stupid mis reading of symbols though .Early religions were often matriarchal reflecting the certain line of descent through the woman . Women stand sacramental for such deities
Female Earth Goddess ( related to fertility) to Male Sky God . Mooslims and Christians are very much the latter . Hence the hoo ha about female vicars .Islam takes the male bias further by placing the authority in an actual man and his special knowledge. A High Priestess is in the most profound way the opposite of Islam and the fact they both wore silly head garments is to be filed under, so what.

I should imagine that sex with a Muslim woman would be ditch water dull except for the danger of being bisected by a long curly knife whilst in flagrante delicto.
I `ll try anyhthing once (or twice)

I don't understand ignorant people who've never made the connection between the veil and desert nomads.

The Bedouin use these kinds of veils to keep the sand out of their mouths and noses and shield their eyes from the sun. The men wear their keffiyas in a similr manner, covering their mouths and noses and shielding their eyes.

They've been taking this sensible precaution since the dawn of time. How can people be so stupid as to think it's a religious requirement? People are so gullible and so ignorant.

It's a control thing with these imams and muftis. Micromanagement.

I noted the good news that the mufti in Oz who claimed that unveiled women were like uncovered meat has had a heart incident. Hopefully, it's serious. It he gets better, I think the Ozzies will deport him back to some hellhole in Dar es-Salaam.
