..."is a "useless" woman with no sense of humour and should stop holding hands with her husband in public"

No, not Cherie Blair, but Jane Howard, in the reckoning of Margaret Whitlam, wife of former Oz PM.

I think the rot set in with Jimmy Carter, and apart from politcians, the reckoning is that anyone over the age of 40 seen holding hands in public has embarked on post divorce dating. Or am I being too cynical?

Being older than dirt meself (40), I prefer associating with ladies who can remember life before the internet and so forth....

I'm not sure that the rot set in with Jimmuh Cahduh, although he and that horrifying Rosalyn (trailer trash name) who were indeed always holding hands was bad enough.

But the idea of making a celebrity out of the First Lady began with Jackie Kennedy, who was only too happy to be made a star in her own right. All those photos of them sailing with their children, as though their children mattered. They're only in that job temporarily. Eight years max.

But I do agree that Jimmy and Rosalyn were the stuff of nightmares on every level.

I think the whole 'First Lady' phenomenon is utterly grim, and I prefer my consorts to keep out of the way and keep their mouths shut, much like Denis Thatcher.

Why exactly would any man want to hold hands with a woman over 40?

Croydonian ,
Im 43 and 35 is my limit, odd as that is precicely the age I stopped going out with women of my own age, I did "go out" with a 17 year old for a year when I was 32 (yes I know)meeting her father for the first tme was a toe curling experience.

PH, she looked more like 16 from where I was standing.

I've found having lady friends replying to some anecdote with 'I was still at junior school' a bit off putting....

At least Tony and Cherie seem genuinely fond of each other. Gordon Brown does not look a tactile man, it would appear false if he did had to hold his wife's hand when taking a stroll. These are big boys who should be able to walk tall and walk alone, but wives should not be three steps behind, but alongside them.

Ooh, you English are a cold lot. I hold hands with my wife and I'm 60. My father used to hold hands with my mother until he popped his clogs. Fie on you.

Ah well, cultural differences and all that.
