"The rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket"

From Hansard:

"Grant Shapps: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much has been spent by his Department on advertising in the last 12 months. [243898]

Gillian Merron: The Foreign and Commonwealth Office's spending on advertising between 19 February 2008 and 18 February 2009 was £1,470,110.04".

I am struggling to think of any reason why the FCO would be advertising in the first place, bar recruitment, but always supposing it had a good reason to blitz the dailies and TV, can anyone remember any of its adverts?

My first thought would be things such as listings for consular services in overseas telephone directories at the like?

If that costs nigh on 1 1/2 very large, I really ought to buy shares in whoever publishes these things.

Try living in the Lake District, where the local ITV channel is Border.

Night after night you see "nanny state" adverts...smoking is bad for you...chips are bad for you etc.

Then you see that the advert has been paid for by The Scottish Executive.

Using my earned in England taxpayer's money.

I think that would be more than averagely annoying. However, I imagine you have a rather nicer view from your window than I have.

You have a point!

Still, having a nice view and not being irritated would be better yet.
