Less than joined up government

In possibly the silliest proposal by any government in living memory, the Dutch Health Ministry is proposing to ban smoking in the nation's infamous cannabis 'coffee' shops.

Although I am pro-legalisation, I cannot see that there is much point in rehashing all of the old pro and con arguments about drug legalisation, but if the Dutch are seeking to change legal practice in those parts, using the figleaf of passive smoking as a way to enforce prohibition is remarkably mendacious. One Dutch MP noted that this "would be the same as banning alcohol in pubs". The ruling coalition lost the vote by the way.

Odd people the Dutch , most of them are actualy very conservative yet they have Amsterdam.
Why hasnt Mr Mania made a dyke joke?

All too likely. Maybe it was a bit early for Mania to be off colour.

If pubs have to ban smoking to avoid passive smoking, why shouldn't the drug caffs (fbidden to sell booze some time ago)? Why shd they be doubly above the law?

Maria-Juana contains nicotine, one of the most addictive substances. It's thus a gateway drug - to tbacco.

Amsterdam is sometimes known as Chicago with canals. The cops (smeurissen) are trying to get the gangsters out of the red light district actuellement. Bet they fail.

TG - the whole point of the Amsterdam coffee shop set up is to provide a tolerance zone, so banning smoking therein is unlikely to have wider social benefits. Plus the Dutch have not banned smoking in bars etc as yet, as far as I know.

There is no nicotine in pot, though the habit of mixing pot and tobacco is a regrettably common one.

Hence the urgent need for a proper public health campaign on these lines:

'Kids! Say no to mixed spliffs - use a bong instead (or a bucket if you must).'

Croy - smoking was due to be outlawed on the 1st Jan., but has been delayed. The idea is that people working in public shouldn't have to smoke other people's smoke. If you say people who work in drug caffs choose to do so, I agree, but the Dutch state is a nanny state, and doesn't want personnel in ordinary caffs saying they don't mind, either.
